Accuracy Precision Assignment 1

The document is an assignment from the Department of ECE at Stanley College of Engineering & Technology for Women. It contains 4 questions about determining the accuracy, precision, and bias of digital thermometers and voltmeters based on repeated measurements. Students are asked to calculate these values from data sets and answer true/false questions about systematic errors, accuracy, and precision.

BE VII SEM EMI Assignment 1

DOI:19/08/2020 DOS:23/08/2020

1. A digital thermometer is used to measure the boiling point of water (100.0C). The
measurement is repeated 5 times and following readings are obtained: 99.9, 101.2,
100.5, 100.8, 100.1. Determine the accuracy, the precision and the bias of the
thermometer.

2. A digital voltmeter uses 4½ digit display (it can display up to 19999). It is used to measure
a voltage across a standard cell whose value is 1.2341 volt 4 times and following readings
are obtained: 1.2202, 1.2115, 1.2456, 1.2218. Determine the accuracy, the precision and
the bias of the voltmeter.

3. A recently calibrated digital voltmeter is used to read a voltage and it consistently yields
75 volts. Another meter in the lab is also used five times to measure the same voltage
and following readings are obtained: 77, 75, 74, 76, 77. For the second meter,
Find the absolute accuracy, relative accuracy and percentage accuracy, precision, bias.

4. Please answer the following True or False questions:

Question True False
Systematic errors can be eliminated by recalibrating the equipment
Systematic errors can be eliminated by making multiple measurements
Accuracy of a measurement is an indication of how close the reading is
to the average value
Accuracy of a measurement is an indication of total errors in the
measurement
The smallest incremental quantity that can be measured is the resolution
The precision is an indicator of consistency in a set of measurements
