MATE2A2 Assessment 5
Instructions: write your own answers down on paper using ink, scan and upload as a single pdf document into
Blackboard (Do not email me your solutions/work, it will not be marked).
In all the exercises, show your working and give your final answer correct to four decimal places if required.
1. Given f (x) = −x if −1 < x < 1 and f (x) = f (x + 2).
(a) Plot the graph of f (x). [1]
(b) Find the trigonometric Fourier series for f (x). [6]
(c) Let x = 1/2 and deduce a series for π/4. [4]
2. Given
−π ≤ t < 0
(
0
f (t) =
cos t 0≤t<π
and f (t) = f (t + 2π).
(a) Find the sum of the Fourier series at t = 0 (at the point of discontinuity). [1]
(b) Find the complex Fourier series for f (t). [8]
3. Show that the integral represents the indicated function. Hint: Use the Fourier integral, cosine integral or sine
integral; the integral tells you which one, and its values tells you what function to consider. Show your work in
detail. [5]
