Tensegrity Stuctures Week1
Tensegrity Stuctures Week1
1 Tension + Integrity
Definition
2
Tensegrity is a structural principle
based on the use of isolated
components in compression inside
a net of continuous tension, in such
a way that the compressed
members (usually bars or struts) do
not touch each other and the
prestressed tensioned members
(usually cables or tendons)
delineate the system spatially.
The Benefits of Tensegrity
3
Tension stabilizes :-
Compression Members loses stiffness when loaded.
Tension member gains stiffness when loaded.
No Bending moment
Large stiffness to mass ratio can be achieved by
increasing the number of tension members.
‘solid’ support.

Basic Principle
14
They are not depending on gravity factors for their own equilibrium;
the tension created by the attraction of the Earth is replaced by the
multidirectional tension of their members.
