INTRODUCTION

1.1 Tensegrity
Tensegrity structures are three dimensional trusses where some members remain in
tension while others are always in compression.A tensegrity system is established when a
set of discontinuous compression components interact with a set of continuous tensile
components to define a stable volume in space.Usually bars or struts are used as
compression members and cables or strings as tensile members.
The word tensegrity was first introduced by Buckminster Fuller in 1954.The
construction of the first true tensegrity structure is however attributed to the artist
Kenneth Snelson who created x-piece sculpture in 1948 as shown in figure 1.1

Only bar-string configurations which are prestressed and in a stable
equilibrium are called tensegrity structures. If well designed, the application of
forces to a tensegrity structure will deform into a slightly different shape in a way
that supports the applied forces.A tensegrity structure's struts cannot be attached to
each other through joints that impart torques. The end of a strut can be attached to
cables or ball jointed to other struts.

1.2 Principle of tensegrity

Tensegrity is a pattern that results when 'push' and 'pull' have a win-win
relationship with each other.Pull is continuous where as push is discontinuous. The
continuous pull is balanced by the discontinuous push, producing the integrity of
tension and compression. These fundamental phenomena do not oppose, but rather
complement each other.Tensegrity is the name for a synergy between a co-existing
pairs of fundamental physical laws of push and pull,or compression and
tension. When the push and pull forces are in balance,it results in a stabilized
system that is maximally strong.

1.3 Aspects of Tensegrity

The aspects of the tensegrity are listed as follows
1.Pin-jointed bar frameworks: Tensegrity structures belong to the structural group
of pin-jointed three dimensional trusses.
2.Pure compressive or tensile members: Tensegrity structures contain only pure
compression and tension members. And tension elements used are cables which
can sustain only tension.
3.Localisation of compression:In tensegrity structures,the compressive elements
are discontinuous. They seem to be floating in a continuous network of tension
elements.
4.Pre-stressed structures:A state of pre-stress or self-stress is required for the
stability of the structure, since it stabilizes internal mechanisms.

1.4 General characteristics

A tensegrity structure generally consist of the following characteristics.

1.4.1 System
A tensegrity system contains
1.components-compression and tension components
2.relational structures-the structure between two different components is known as
relational structures.
3.total structure-the components and relational structures associatively is known as
total structure.
1.4.2 Stable self-equilibrated state
Tensegrity structures are stable because the system can re-establish it's
equilibrium after a disturbance. It is self-equilibrated because it does not need any
other external condition. It is independent of external forces (even gravity) or
anchorages due to its self-stress initial state.

1.4.3 Components
The components used for a tensegrity structure can be
struts, cables, membranes, air volume,an assembly of elementary components etc.

1.4.4 Compressed or tensioned components

The compressed components must be disconnected, and the tensioned
components should be connected to create an 'ocean' of continuous tension with
discontinuous compression floating in it.

1.4.5 Boundary surface

This is an important characteristic since it set aparts tensegrity structure from
the conventional structures, where compression is the basis of the load support, and
with the tensegrities ,this role is played by tension. In order to avoid controversial
systems, such as the torus, with different insides and outsides, tensegrity system is
generalised do that all its compressed components lie inside the system and the
points at the ends of these compressed components do not belong to the
boundary. Thus in a tensegrity system the boundary surface has tension lines only.
