Activity #5 One Sample Mean Z-Test Name: Date: Grade & Section: Score

The document provides details and steps to solve two hypothesis testing problems using a one-sample z-test. The first problem tests a manufacturer's claim about the average activating temperature of sprinkler systems, and finds enough evidence to reject the claim. The second problem tests a claim about the average amount of water consumed in Montana residences, and finds enough evidence to reject the claim that the average is 125 gallons.

Activity #5

One Sample Mean Z-Test

Name: Date:
Grade & Section: Score:

Read and analyse the problem. Answer completely by following the steps of hypothesis
testing in the examples given. Label/frame the necessary parts of your answers.
(10 points each=20 points)

1. A manufacturer of sprinkler systems designed for fire protection claims that the
average activating temperature is at least 135◦F. To test this claim, you randomly
select a sample of 32 systems and find the mean activation temperature to be
133◦F with a standard deviation of 3.3◦F. At α = 0.10, do you have enough
evidence to reject the manufacturer’s claim?

Given:
μ = 135oF x̄ = 133oF
σ = 3.3 α = 0.10
n = 32
Step 1: Ho: The average activating temperature of sprinkler systems designed for fire
protection is at least 135oF. μ ≥ 135

Step 2: Ha: The average activating temperature of sprinkler systems designed for fire
protection is less than 135oF.μ < 135

Step 3: Type of Test: One-tailed

Step 4: Test statistic:  Z-test

Step 5: Level of significance: 0.10

Step 6: Formula: σ

z=−3.43

Step 7:  Computed Value: z=−3.43

Step 8: p−value:  0.0003

Step 9: Decision: Reject the null hypothesis

Step 10: Conclusion: The average activating temperature of sprinkler systems designed
for fire protection is less than 135oF

2. . The amount of water consumed each week by Montana residences is normally

distributed. A simple random sample of 35 residences was taken with a sample
mean of 120.3 gallons and a standard deviation of 10.0 gallons. Test the claim at
the 0.05 level of significance that the average amount of water consumed is not
125 gallons.

Given:
μ = 125 gallons x̄ = 120.3 gallons
σ = 10 α = 0.05
n = 35

Step 1: Ho: The average amount of water consumed is 125 gallons. μ = 125 gallons

Step 2: Ha: The average amount of water consumed is not equal 125 gallons. μ ≠ 125
gallons

Step 3: Type of Test: Two-tailed test

Step 4: Test statistic:  Z-test

Step 5: Level of significance: 0.05

Step 6: Formula: σ

Step 7:  Computed Value: z=−2.78

Step 8: p−value: 0.005436

Step 9: Decision: Reject null hypothesis

Step 10: Conclusion: The average amount of water consumed is not equal 125 gallons.
