7 Organization of Data PDF

The document discusses organizing and presenting data through frequency distributions. It provides examples of categorical and grouped frequency distributions. A categorical distribution sorts data into categories, like blood types. A grouped distribution sorts larger datasets into classes of ranges, like temperatures by state grouped into classes of 5 degree intervals. The document demonstrates how to construct each type of distribution, including calculating class limits, boundaries, frequencies, and classmarks.

Organization

and
Presentation of
Data
• When conducting a statistical study, the
researcher must gather data for the
particular variable under the study.
-If a researcher wishes to study the
number of people who were bitten by
poisonous snake in a specific geographic
area over the past several years, he or
she has to gather the data from various
doctors, hospitals or health department.

Ungrouped Data
Suppose a researcher wished
to do a study on the ages of
the top 50 wealthiest people
in the world. The researcher
first would have to get the
data on the ages of the
people. Then the data are
listed and are called raw data.
• Since little information can be
obtained from looking at raw data,
the researcher organize the data
into a frequency distribution.

Types of frequency distribution

1. Categorical Frequency
Distribution – is used for data
that can be placed in specific
categories such as normal or
ordinary level data.

Categorical Frequency Distribution
Example: Twenty-five army inductees
were given a blood test to determine
their blood type. The data set is

2. Grouped Frequency
Distribution – is used when the
data is large, and must be
grouped into classes that are
more than 1 unit in length.
- is the organization of raw
data in table form, using
classes and frequencies.

Grouped Frequency Distribution
Example: These data represent
the record high temperatures in
degrees Fahrenheit for each of
the 50 states. Construct a
grouped frequency distribution
for the data using 7 classes.

Definition:
Frequency – is the number of data value contained in a
specific class
100 – 104, 105-109,…,130-134 - class limits or classes or
class interval
100, 105,…, 130 - lower class limit ; represents the
smallest data value in the class
104, 109, …, 134 – upper class limit ; represents the
largest data value in the class
99.5 – 104.5,…,129.5-134.5 – class boundaries; real
limits; true limits
Midpoint, midvalue, classmark – is obtained by adding
the lower and upper boundaries, then dividing by 2.
