Marzuki was born to a wealthy Betawi on 11 May 1914. His father ran an automobile
repair shop and his mother died while giving birth to him. He had enjoyed music since his
early age. His father played the rebana at home and he listened to songs on the family's
gramophone. He learned to play the rebana, the ukulele and the guitar from his childhood.
Marzuki had a good education. He attended the Hoolansch- Inlandsche Schools in
Menteng, then the Dutch language middle school on Menjangan streets. He also studied
religion at Unwanul Wustha Madrasah. However, he did not study music formally.
As a composer, Marzuki wrote about 204 songs. He wrote his first song, entitled "O
Sarinah" in 1931. The song was about a suffering woman. Rayuan Pulau Kelapa (1944),
Gugur Bunga di Taman Bakti (1945) and Selendang Sutra (1946) were among his most
prominent compositions. One year before he died, he wrote his last song, inikah bahagia. He
died on 25 May 1958 in his house. He was buried in Kare Bivak Cemetery.
