Project Selection: Event Project – Seminar

Group Project - Part 1

Business Case – Most immigrants do not get skilled jobs in Canada.

For students, when it comes to choosing a College/University, there is no doubt that

high levels of employability after graduation is one of the most important attributes for any

educational institution. A curious fact about this is that for most immigrants, all over the

world, who arrive in Canada, getting a good job usually in the same career they had in their

home countries, is a very hard and complicated task (5 Reasons Skilled Immigrants Complain

They Don’t Get Jobs in Canada, 2018). Researches are showing that between many reasons

for this really, one of them is lack of information about the Canadian market, institutions,

work environment, selection process and so on (5 Reasons Skilled Immigrants Complain

They Don’t Get Jobs in Canada, 2018).

Centennial College as one of the most traditional and important Colleges of Canada,

needs to give an effective contribution as an attempt to change this reality, especially because

90% of its student community is composed by international students looking for Permanent

Residence in Canada (Admissions | International Education, 2018), which requires at least 1

year of experience in a high skilled job (Canadian Experience Class, 2018).

In order to achieve this goal, we designed the project “Seminar Achieving Success

After Graduation”. The Event will focus on providing all required information to make our

student’s community aware of the steps to follow, the behavior to adopt and everything about

“what to do” to find the job you need and want. Starting from how to get the best from your

time as a student, how to build a resume following the Canadian style to how to behave inside

the Canadian work environment is going to be taught and a special consultation with a career

coach is going to be provided. It is extremely likely that by being aware of the right steps to

follow, Centennial’s students can really improve their performance not only during their job

runt but inside the Canadian work environment as well. Consequently, the College’s brand

equity is going to improve and our registration’s rate can increase considerably.

1. Project Charter

Project Objectives: Provide Centennial College students all the required information in order
to be successful in the process of finding a job after graduation as well as being triumphant in
the workplace. Key topics related to resume preparation, job application, behavior during

3. Stakeholder Assessment

Our project is going to have 20 main stakeholders, including the project manager.

Among these stakeholders, we can mention the project sponsor, which is also the College's

chair, Donald Wang as the most important one being classified in the Interest Grid as High

Power/High Interest. Mr. Wang is looking for improving Centennial's image as the College

number 1 in job placement after graduation in the entire country. In order to achieve this goal

he is investing strongly in different types of activities to make it achievable and one of them
Group Project - Part 1

is our seminar. Mr. Wang is expecting a registration rate of at least 90% of the regular

students (full-time and part-time). Our strategy in order to keep our sponsor satisfied, is

working hard from the beginning in the advertisement of the Seminar and sending weekly

reports for evaluation.

Regarding our stakeholders classified as low interest/high power which are our CFO

and CIO, the ones with the major responsibility of approving funds, I want to make sure they

really understand about the importance of the project in order to make sure that the process of

funding would become not easy, but coherent. Firstly, I will have a meeting with them when

the business case is going to be presented in details as well as the positive return on the

College's image once we were able to improve our student's rate of employment after

graduation. After the project starts, I will be sending regular feedbacks regarding all

investments made and its respective outcome.

For our stakeholder classified as high interest/low power, which are mainly our team

members and our suppliers, a meeting with all staff is going to take place, everyone, Monday

morning, in the meeting room of the Hub. During this meeting, I want to make sure that all

deliverables of our WBS are being properly assigned and that the team is going to meet its

deadline in order to the project be concluded on time. During this meeting, I am also going to

be giving feedbacks about results so far as well as discussing any required improvement.

Also, the team is going to receive all requested support. As the timeframe for this project is

extremely short (only three months), we need to make sure with at least 20 days prior de

Seminar date all handle materials are prepared; the food suppliers are hired as well that all the

speaker guests are contacted and booked. In order to do that, the entire team is going to have

weekly and in some cases, daily targets to be delivered. During our weekly meetings, we will

have the opportunity to analyze how well we are doing, what needs to be done and the

development of our critical path. Each team member responsible for hiring suppliers and
Group Project - Part 1

finding speaker guests are going to be meeting with them one week prior the Seminar to

make sure everything is on track and a report will be given to me during our weekly meeting.

For our PR, Debora Mag which is also the College's PR Direct and will be helping us

to advertise the Seminar, I will be sending weekly reports of the registration numbers

achieved so far and news about the Seminar's attractions to be publicized within Centennial's

community. Debora is absolutely busy with her activities and she is not receiving extra

payment for including our Seminar on her schedule. I need to make sure she is complying

with the deal of supporting the project and releasing properly and fast, information related to

the project and the importance of registering early to get an available spot.
