The Pen Was Mightier Than The Sword
The Pen Was Mightier Than The Sword
Jose Rizal use his smartest way to show us the corruption and wrongdoings of
government officials as well as the Spanish friars. Violence and rebellion are not always the
defense against abusers but the pen was mightier than the sword. His careful and effective way
to convey to the people that they have the ability to fight in their own country. He used his
writing to be a weapon to the Spaniards, Rizal contributed essays, poems, allegories, and
editorials to the Spanish newspaper, La Solidaridad. Most of his writings, both in his essays and
editorials, centered on individual rights and freedom, specifically for the Filipino people.
Apart from his best work, the Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The
Reign of the Greed) were the two novels who awakened and gave hope to the Filipinos. Where
the injustices and cruelty of the Spaniards as well as their rule in the Philippines and the ill
effects of treating Filipinos as slaves are written. Even the Spanish government forbade Filipinos
to read these controversial books yet they did not fully do so. As more Filipinos read these
books, they became the key to making them aware of the fact that they were suffering at the
hands of the Spaniards. They seem to be the voice and face of the Filipinos against the rule of
the Spaniards which well shows what the real cruelty they experienced in the Spanish
government.
When Rizal returned to the Philippines, he formed a strong and reliable organization
called La Liga Filipina, they took the lead in advancing social reform through legal means.
Which led to him being considered a threat to the Spaniards as well as his novels and essays.
With the death of Rizal, the Philippine revolution continued and they became even more
courageous and resilient against Spain with the help of the Americans who continued until
1898 because of him the Philippines declared its independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.
Rizal started the fire against the government of Spain, he exposed them which led the
Filipino’s to be aware and to know that they have the ability to defend their rights and country
against the Spanish government. Even though he did not have the ability to fight with weapons,
he used his knowledge to start awakening the Filipinos and his own death did not prevent him
from winning the fight he started. He became an example, leader, fighter, in sympathy with his
fellow Filipinos he became brave for his whole countrymen who were forced to be abused and
mistreated by the Spaniards. Until now the Filipinos have not forgotten what he has done in the
country, his works continue to be honored even some of the places in the Philippines are
named after him as a tribute to his achievements to make our country free from Spain. Rizal's
novels Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of the Greed) became
a way to show the Filipinos their experiences during the Spanish period.
