Expound the following topic:

1. Grammar Translation Method


Grammar Translation Method is language teaching based on grammar and
translation. It is a method of second language instruction based on learning
grammatical rules and practicing them by doing translations of the vocabularies of
the target language. It is also called as Classical Method. Reading and writing are the
main language skills of this method.

2. Direct Method
Direct Method which also called as Natural Method is a method of second
language teaching which consist that only the target language should be used in
class and meaning should be communicated directly by associating speech forms
with action, objects, mime, gesture and situations. As the term implies, it is a
method that connected directly with the target language. It aims to build a direct
relation between experience and language, word and idea, thought and
expression. Speaking and listening are main skills in this method.

3. Oral Approach and Situational Language Teaching


Oral Approach and Situational Language Teaching is an approach developed by
British linguist which had an impact on language courses. This approach relied on the
structural view of language. Both speech and structure were seen to be the basis of
language and, especially in speaking ability. In this approach, it cited that Language
skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written
form. This approach is known for introducing the grammar and vocabulary through
oral and speaking skills.

4. AudioLingual Method
Current Trends in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
Audio Lingual Method is structure based approach to language teaching. This
method contains the key items of phonology, morphology, and syntax of the
language arranged according to their order presentation. It emphasizes the teaching
of listening and speaking before reading and writing.

5. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)


Communicative Language Teaching is an approach that represents the
philosophy of teaching that is based on communicative language use and also based
on communicative competence. CLT emphasizes the importance in communication
rather than the grammatical structures.

6. Total Physical Response (TPR)


Total Physical Response is a language teaching method basically the
combination of language and physical movement. TPR is the use of actions to create
a mind and body connection to words making them easier for the student to
remember. This method links the word and action to boost language and vocabulary
learning.

7. Community Language Learning (CLL)


Community Language Learning is also known as Counselling-Learning. It is a
method that practice speaking and listening. CLL view that learning takes place in a
communicative situation where teachers and learners are involved in an interaction.
It redefines the roles of teacher as counsellor and the learner as client. In CLL, the
translation will be provided by the teacher, and native language are permitted among
students because in CLL the students are encouraged to express how they feel about
the learning process.

8. Silent Way
Silent Way is a method based on the premise that teacher should be silent as
much as possible and the learners should be encouraged to involve in speaking
as much as possible. It is a method that believes on the ideology that silence
make students to concentrate on what is to be learned. This learning method is
facilitated by problem solving involving the material and physical objects to be
learned.

9. Suggestopedia
Current Trends in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
Suggestopedia is a method use in language teaching that is based on the idea
of how the human brain works and how we learn most effectively. It includes a rich
sensory learning like listening to music. This method encourages relaxation and
enhances learning.

10.Eclectic Method
Eclectic Method is the combination of all the teaching approaches. It
encourages teacher to use different techniques and teaching methodology which is
flexible and simple for both teacher and learner especially in teaching language in the
classroom.
