OVERVIEW
The hydraulic start system consists of a start system skid (mounted on the auxiliary skid) and a
hydraulic starter (mounted on the turbine). The hydraulic start system is designed for starting the
turbine, and is also capable of cranking it for fuel purging, water washing, and maintenance.
The skid equipment consists of a reservoir, filters, heat exchanger, a charge pump (that maintains
a flow of pressurized hydraulic fluid to the main pump), and the main variable-displacement
pump. High-pressure hydraulic fluid is delivered from the main pump (on the skid), to the
hydraulic starter (on the turbine) and is used to drive the turbine shaft during startup, cranking, or
off-line water wash.
The control system modulates pump flow in order to control of turbine speed for purging,
ignition and acceleration. Two operating speeds are provided: a low speed for water washing or
maintenance, and a high speed for turbine starting and purging.
During operation, hydraulic fluid is drawn from the reservoir by the charge pump. The charge
pump replenishes the main, closed-loop system that supplies hydraulic fluid to the main pump.
The main pump increases the hydraulic fluid pressure and delivers the pressurized hydraulic
fluid to the hydraulic starter mounted on the turbine. The hydraulic starter returns used hydraulic
fluid back to the pump on the auxiliary skid, and any excess fluid is routed back to the reservoir.

“Hydraulic Start System”.
The start system is composed of a 200 HP, 150KW, 440 VAC electric motor driving a Rex Roth
servo actuated, variable displacement hydraulic pump. The motor and pump are mounted on the
auxiliary skid.
Start system oil tank instrumentation includes HE-6010, LT-6001, and TE-6003. HE-6010 is a
3KW heater. The level transmitter LT-6001 is used to indicate low oil tank level and also acts a
low-level cutoff for the heater in the event that oil level gets too low. This is done to prevent oil
coking on the elements. TE-6003 is a low alarm and high alarm temperature monitor, which
serves as a start permissive. Turbine oil temperature must be above 21 Deg C (70 °F) in order
for the starter to function smoothly. For temperatures above 82 Deg C (180 °F) TE-6003 will
issue an alarm, and for temperatures above 88 Deg C (190 °F) will issue an FSLO. Both LT-
6001 and TE-6003 are loop monitored for circuit integrity and will issue alarm conditions if
wiring or device problems exist.
Oil is drawn from the tank to the charge pump. The charge pump is one of two pumps in the
hydraulic pump assembly. The charge pump takes suction from the hydraulic oil reservoir and
discharges the hydraulic oil through a filter to the main pump. The main pump increases the
hydraulic fluid pressure and delivers the pressurized fluid to the hydraulic starter motor on the
turbine.
A vacuum pressure switch is located at the supply side of the hydraulic pump. PDSHH-6025
monitors the inlet for vacuums in excess of 165 mm Hg (6.5” Hg). If this level is exceeded, the
start system shuts down. This switch is also loop monitored.
The turbine-mounted starter motor and clutch assembly is located on the auxiliary gearbox. It is
driven by hydraulic fluid under high pressure from the main hydraulic oil pump. The hydraulic
starter motor has a fixed angle swash plate with movable pistons. The high-pressure fluid forces
the pistons to move within the cylinder, causing the motor to rotate. At standstill, the pawls of
the centrifugal clutch engage in the gear on the starting motor output shaft.
Discharge from the turbine-mounted hydraulic starter enters the low-pressure return system on
its way back to the hydraulic pump. A low-pressure return filter removes entrained particles.
Integral to the filter is a bypass loop and visual clogging indicator. Hydraulic pump case drain
oil is routed indirectly to the hydraulic reservoir after passing through the case drain return filter
and heat exchanger.
HEAT EXCHANGER
Additional instrumentation for the start system includes a temperature switch TSH-6002 that will
monitor starter oil discharge temperature. This alarm, set to 82 deg C (180 °F), will indicate a
possible problem with the hydraulic starter motor.
Also TE-6027 will issue an alarm if hydraulic starter oil drain temperature is above 93 Deg C
(200° F) and a shutdown if the temperature goes higher than 110 Deg C (230 °F).
