GE Energy LM2500+ G4 Operation and Maintenance Manual: Water Wash System Description

The water wash system removes contaminant deposits from the gas turbine compressor using a water and detergent solution. During a wash cycle, the solution is sprayed into the compressor at a controlled pressure, temperature, and flow rate. The system consists of a tank, pump, piping, valves and a manifold. It can perform an online wash while the turbine is operating or an offline wash when shut down by directing the wash solution through different valves and spray nozzles.

OVERVIEW

Over time, gas turbines experience a loss of performance due to contaminant deposits on internal
components. This loss is indicated by a decrease in power output and an increase in heat rate.
These deposits result from the ingestion of air that contains dirt, dust, and hydrocarbon fumes. A
large portion of these contaminants is removed by inlet air filtration, but contaminants that pass
through the filters have to be removed from the compressor by washing.

The primary purpose of the water wash system is to remove contaminants from the turbine
compressor. During the washing operation, a solution (a water and detergent mix) is sprayed in
to the gas turbine at the proper pressure, temperature, and flow rate to wash the compressor. The
wash is followed by a rinse cycle, which is designed to remove detergent residue. Washing can
be performed while the turbine is on-line or off –line.

The water wash system consists of tank and pump (mounted on the auxiliary skid), inter-
connecting piping, control valves, and an on-line wash manifold.

System Description

To follow this description on the system F&ID, refer to your site-specific GE drawing 740262.

The water wash tank, located on the auxiliary skid, has 2 inlets (one for demineralized water and
one for chemicals/detergent), a level gauge (LG-5027), and a hand controlled tank drain valve.
The tank has a capacity of 102 L (27 gal). Water is manually supplied to water wash tank.

Tank outlets include a tank vent breather and the main outlet to the suction side of the pump.
Downstream of the pump is a filter and a check valve. A 3-way solenoid operated valve, SOV-
5031 directs water to the turbine. An “Offline Water Wash” is initiated when the SOV-5031 is
not energized. Once SOV-5031 is energized, water is then directed to the spray nozzles for the
“Online Water Wash” manifold.

Both online and offline water wash requires an air supply (SOV-5034) for operation of the
pneumatic pump. One solenoid-operated valve (SOV-5034) controls the air supply. Air
pressure is controlled by PCV-5028.
