Power System Practice Problem

This document provides instructions and 10 problems for Quiz #2 on complex power in three-phase balanced AC circuits. Students have 3 hours to complete the quiz, showing full work for each problem on half a sheet of paper. Those with stable internet will download the problems and have 15 minutes to copy them before starting. Those with unstable internet will receive the problems by messenger 10 minutes before the exam starts. Students must show their work on camera if taking the exam online. The 10 problems cover topics like power calculations for multiple loads, power factor, line currents, phase relationships, and complex power for multiple loads.

QUIZ #2 (Complex Power on Three-Phase Balanced AC Circuits)

Time duration: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Three Hours)

(Note: Examination given during make-up classes)

Instructions:
1. Answer the following problems and show complete solutions (Note: Use one-half sheet of
short size bond paper per problem). (10 Points Each). Note: Passing score = 60%.

2. For those with stable internet connectivity, download the problem through our Google
classroom from the Google classwork. You will be given 15 minutes to rewrite the problem in
your notebook. Timer will start when the 15-minute period expires. Put on your video and focus
yourself on the camera in a way you can be seen while answering the problem. Submit or turn-
in your work through the google class.

3. For those with unstable internet connectivity that upon notification through the undersign 10
minutes prior to the start of the exam proper, copy of problem set will be sent via messenger.
Upon acknowledged that you received a copy of the problems, you will be given 15 minutes to
rewrite the problem. Timer will start when the 15-minute period expires. Submit or turn-in your
work and send it through our Google glass. And in the event that your internet connectivity
improves immediately after the 3-hour period expires, sent it via a messenger in pdf file.

Problem #1: Two balanced three-phase loads are connected across a 230-V, 3-phase feeder. The first
load draws 6 kW at 0.80 lagging power factor while the second load draws 12 kW at 0.866 leading power
factor. Determine the current in the feeder conductors.

Problem #2: A balanced delta connected load has a line voltage of 100 V at the load terminals and absorbs
a total power of 4.8 kW. If the power factor of the load is 0.80 leading, find the phase impedance. (Express
answer in rectangular form).

Problem #3: An alternator is delivering a balanced load at 0.866 power factor lagging. Determine the
angle displaced between the line voltage V ab and the phase current Ia. Assumed a Y-connected system for
the load and the phase sequence is ABC counterclockwise.

Problem #4: Three impedance coils each having a resistance of 20 ohms and a reactance of 15 ohms are
connected in star to a 400-V, three-phase, 50-Hz supply. If three capacitors each of the same capacitance
are connected in delta to the same supply so as to form parallel circuit with the above impedance coils.
Determine the capacitance of each capacitor to obtain a resultant power factor of 0.95 lagging.

Problem #5: Three delta connected resistors absorb 60 kW when connected to a 3-phase line. If the same
resistors are connected in star to the same 3-phase line, calculate the power that will be absorbed.

Problem #6: Two balanced Y-connected loads A and B are connected across a 3-phase, 3-wire balanced
system. Load A draws 6 kW at 80% power factor lagging while load B draws 12 kW at 83.5% power factor
leading. If the current in the three lines are each equal 8 A, determine the line current drawn by load A.

Problem #7: A balanced three-phase Y-connected source has, V an = 390cis(30o) V. Using a positive
phase sequence rotation, find V bc. (Note: Express answer in complex polar form).

Problem #8: The following information is given in connection with three loads connected in parallel:
Load A = 4.6 kW at unity power factor
Load B = 11.5 kVA at lagging p.f. of 0.62
Load C = 5.52 kW at leading p.f. of 0.80
Determine the over-all power factor.

Problem #9. A balanced three-phase, 3-wire system supplies to a balanced Y-connected loads. The first
load draws 6 kW at 0.80 power factor lagging while the other requires 12 kW at 0.833 power factor leading.
If the current in each line is 8 amperes, what is the source voltage between lines?

Problem #10. A 400-V, 3-phase, 3-wire line supplies power to two balanced 3-phase loads in parallel: A
Y-connected load with each branch impedance equal to (5 + j5) ohms and a ∆-connected with each branch
impedance equal to (10 – j5) ohms. Calculate the total complex power drawn by the loads. (Note: Express
answer in rectangular coordinates)
