Math2065: Intro To Pdes

This document provides 4 problems related to partial differential equations for a tutorial. It begins by stating there is no new material and students should use the time to ask questions and complete previously assigned problems. The 4 problems include: (1) using techniques from the course to solve a first-order initial value problem, (2) using Laplace transforms to solve a second-order differential equation, (3) using separation of variables to solve an initial-boundary value problem for heat transfer in a rod, and (4) explicitly solving the initial-boundary value problem when the initial condition is a specific function.

MATH2065: INTRO TO PDEs

Semester 2, 2009
Tutorial (Week 8)
There is no new material for the tutorial this week, Instead, you are being given a chance to
catch up and to ask your tutor questions about previous problems. You should also complete the
assignment questions (which are appended below again). The solutions will be posted next week
as the solutions to tutorial 8.
1. Consider the initial value problem

− 5 φ = sin t + (t + 1) e5t ; φ(0) = 0 ,
dt
where the unknown is φ(t). In First Year maths, you learnt how to solve first-order ODEs of
this form using an integrating factor. In this question, you are asked to solve the above ini-
tial value problem using techniques that you have learnt in MATH2065. That is, determine
the corresponding homogeneous solution φh (t) and the particular solution φp (t) (using unde-
termined coefficients), and thereby determine the solution φ(t) to the initial value problem.
(Note that although we have studied these methods in MATH2065 within the context of
second-order ODEs, the ideas are clearly applicable – and in fact somewhat easier to apply
– to first-order ODEs).

2. Use Laplace transforms to solve the following differential equation for y(t):
 −t
2
dy dy e , 0 < t < 3,
+ 5 − 6y =
dt2 dt
0, t > 3,

given that y(0) = 0 and y 0 (0) = 2.

3. Solve the initial-boundary value problem:

∂u ∂ 2u
= , for 0 < x < π , t > 0
∂t ∂x2
u(0, t) = 0, (left boundary condition)
∂u
(π, t) = 0, (right boundary condition)
∂x
u(x, 0) = f (x), (initial condition)
This models the temperature variation in a rod of length π, initially at a temperature given
by f (x), then positioned with one end in ice and the other end insulated.
(a) Determine the steady-state solution, ū(x), to the problem.
(b) Using the method of separation of variables, find the general solution u(x, t) to the
PDE plus boundary conditions as an infinite series involving unknown coefficients An .
(c) Find an expression for An in terms of the initial condition function f (x). You may
assume the result

Z π  0, n 6= m,
2n + 1 2m + 1
sin x sin x dx =
0 2 2
π/2, n = m,

for n, m integers.
(d) Find u(x, t) for the case where f (x) = 100.
