Welcome to the Arts 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Arts and Crafts of
Luzon (Highlands and Lowlands).

Do you love art? Have you ever dreamed of becoming an artist? Art has been a part of our
lives for as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, people have been
creating, looking, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to address three questions: what is
art, what is its purpose, and why has it survived for this long?

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided
and independent learning at your own pace and time. It will enable you to process the
contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

Use your MAPEH activity notebook (big notebook) in answering the written tasks. For
activities like drawing, designing, etc., use bond papers in doing the tasks of which
later be made into portfolio. While some outputs that require creative skill like mat
and ball weaving, flower and collage making, etc., should be done and be included in
your submission.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities included
in the module. Please answer the questions HONESTLY! Your answers will not affect
your grade.

4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.

What I Need to Know

In this module, you will understand more how lines, colors, shapes, forms, balance,
rhythm, and repetition give more meaning and significance to an artwork. This will help
you understand the processes in art and its impact to you as an individual. It is also
important in appreciating the world around you and you as a significant part of the
masterpiece by the One who created everything.

This module will help you understand that art plays a significant role in the daily
activities of the community as well as it describes the unique lines, forms and shapes
found in the representative artworks from Luzon and employ different art elements and
principles in making your artworks.

After going through this module, you are expected to analyze elements and principles of
art in the production of one’s arts and crafts inspired by the arts of Luzon (highlands and
lowlands).

Specifically, you are expected to:

1. identify the elements and principles of arts;


2. create an artwork that shows elements and principles of design using objects
from nature;
3. appreciate the importance of the elements and principles of art in one’s artwork.

What is It

Now that you have an idea


of the things that you will
be learning in this module,
it’s time for you to officially

Visual Arts may have no words, yet they have the power to communicate feelings,
moods and ideas thru the elements and principles of art.

You will learn more about the elements and principles of art as you study the lesson in
this module.

ELEMENTS OF ART

1. Line- is the path of a moving point. Lines define the edges of shapes and forms.

2. Shape- is an area enclosed by line. It is 2 dimensional and can be geometric or


organic.

3. Forms- are 3-Dimesional. They occupy space or give the illusion that they occupy
the space.

4. Color- is the most expressive element of art and is seen by the way light reflects of a
surface and also adds interest and reality to an artwork.

5. Value- is the lightness and darkness of a surface. It is often referred to when


shading. Value is also important in the study of color.

6. Texture- is the actual surface feel or the simulated appearance of roughness,


smoothness and many others.

7. Space- is the distance around, between, above, below, and within an object.

PRINCIPLES OF ART

1. Balance- refers to the visual of the elements of the composition. It is a sense that the
painting “feels stable and feels right”.

2. Contrast- is the difference between elements of art in the composition, such that
each element is made stronger in relation to the other.

3. Emphasis- is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually
dominant and commands the viewer’s attention.

4. Pattern- is the uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or any combination
thereof.

5. Movement- is the result of using the elements of art such that they move the viewer’s
eye around and within the image.

6. Rhythm- is created by movement complied through the repetition of elements of art
in a non-uniform but organized way.

7. Unity/Variety- is visually pleasing agreement among the elements in a design; it is


the feeling that everything in the work of art works together and looks like it fits.

The elements and principles of arts can be found in all forms of art. This include the arts
and crafts of Luzon (Highland and Lowlands). Now, let us discuss on the different arts
and crafts of Luzon.

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF LUZON (HIGHLANDS AND LOWLANDS)

The following places are under the Highlands of Luzon:

A. Ilocos Region- known for its calle crisologo where we can see the old
Spanish-type houses.

1. Kalinga- the natives of Kalinga are skilled weavers. Their textiles are
characterized by red stripes; and white, yellow, and black geometrical pattern.

2. Ifugao- the term Ifugao means “native of the Cordillera.”

1. Batanes- is known for its stone houses.

1. Bulacan- the arts and crafts of Bulacan includes singkaban, pastillas
wrappers and fire crackers.

3. Zambales- the Spanish gate is one of the historic landmarks located in


Olongapo City.

4. Nueva Vizcaya- the Abucay church was established in 1587 and


administered in 1588 by the Dominicans.

1. Laguna- is famous for its wood carving and is considered as the “Wood
carving Capital of the Philippines.”

2. Rizal Province- the province iss considered as the “Art Capital of the
Philippines.” It is also known for its higantes.

3. Taal, Batangas- is famous in producing embroidered piña fabric and also


known for their burda, called calado and balisong, called butterfly knife.

4. Quezon- is known for its Pahiyas festival, a colorful celebration were kiping
with different colors were decorated in their houses.

D. Bicol Region- they are known for their baskets, bags, slippers and coin purses
made from abaca and raffia leaves.
