Welcome to my ePortfolio
Hello. My name is Christian Paul L. Mendoza and I’d like to welcome you to my ePortfolio. I am a
student at University of Baguio; I’m currently enrolled as a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
student. This ePortfolio is one of the requirements we are completing for the enrolled course. I am
currently in my senior year and finishing my five-year Diploma.
In addition to this Welcome page, my ePortfolio includes a Resume Page and a Work Page. On my
Resume page you will find attached a copy of my current resume, as well as a description of the various
achievements and experiences I’ve held over the years. My Work page contains papers and results Ive
completed for this engineering class.
My Contact Me page holds information about how you can contact me for an interview or if you require
any other information about me.
I hope you enjoy reading over the information in my ePortfolio as much as I enjoyed creating it for you!
My Work Page
I have completed several different activities in our subject covering various aspects of the legal profession
in this course. On this page, I have attached examples of these activities, and narrative report on what I
have learned in this subject during the semester.
NARRATIVE REPORT
Engineering Estimates and Buiding Laws 1 (ESTLAW1), is one of the vital subjects of a Civil
Engineering student. It covers topics that are very useful to future engineers because it is usually utilized
in any project. And in order to be a competent Civil Engineer, you have to be knowledgeable and expert in
the field of Estimates.
During the first grading period, introduction to estimates and masonry works estimations were the
topics discussed. I was able to recall the contract types or agreement classifications, I was able to know
different types of estimates such as detailed estimates and assembly estimates. I also got to remember
types of cement and the compositions of such. In this grading, I was able to know how to estimate the
materials to be used in terms of masonry works. I learned that there are many approaches in estimating
the materials to be used and will be later on purchased. For the concrete hollow block, which is one of the
important parts in making composite concrete structures. Being knowledgeable in basic math, we can
estimate quantity of materials. The volume method, area method and direct counting are the most
common approaches in estimations. Given the tables which were provided in the book of Max Fajardo,
estimating materials got easier. I honestly got hard comprehending the concept of estimates especially to
masonry works. It is very evident in the scores of my activities. I had to adjust from the theorical
calculations from mathematics to structural theories to mathematical calculations considering real
conditions and scenarios. I was also able to understand where proportions of concrete come from
considering its class if it is either an AA, A, B or C class.
In the second grading period, metal reinforcements for beams, girders, columns and slabs (one-
way or two-way), lumber and its properties, and quantity estimation of lumber materials were discussed.
During this period, I was already able to adjust in terms of the topics being discussed considering that I
have a poor foundation especially to design subjects. Here, I was able to appreciate the concept of
estimates itself. I realized that maybe in life, money may not be important but in concstruction projects, as
a future engineer, every centavo counts. Over estimation and underestimation of material quantities lead
to additional project cost. A great example is in metal reinforcements. Scraps and wastages are very
evident in metal reinforcements because of uneconomical combinations of length of bars or wrong
purchase of length of bars to be utilized. We calculate metal reinforcements either by direct counting, per
meter or by area method. The area method is a convenient approach to get the number of metal
reinforcements desired but for me, the direct counting method is advised if we want to save not just
money but resources such as materials. Also, I got to appreciate the importance of following
specifications. For example, in the beam details, it is important to follow certain spacings starting from the
support down to the midspan of the member. It is due to stability and to resist forces such as shear force
on the beam.
For the final grading, lumber and other materials, scaffoldings, roofing and tileworks were the
scope of discussions. Here, I was able to appreciate one of the vital roles of a Civil Engineer in terms of
construction management because we had a case study in scaffolding incidents. Scaffolds are important
material in making the structures we aim to produce especially in the exterior parts and high level areas of
the said structure. But, it is also one of the common factors that contribute to the rate of accidents, fatality
and motality rates in construction processes that is why we need to observe proper setting up and
estimation of the materials to be needed in making such. We should consider these materials because
painting works and installation of exterior design especially on high elevations cannot be possible without
the support of the platforms where laborers or workers will be standing on. I also learned that in roofing
materials, GI sheets are the most used materials in any of the parts of the roofing of the building we tend
to erect. Flashing, gutters, ridge rolls and economical combinations for roofing were discussed and there
are specific methods to be used to determine the quantity of the following . It is by meter or per area
method. Also, I learned that a good quantity estimator, we should be able to consider other factors that
might occur during the project phase.
