Frame System

Framing systems consist of columns, beams, and shear walls that support the structure and carry and distribute vertical and lateral loads. They resist gravity and wind/earthquake pressures. Dual systems use a combination of shear walls or braced frames along with moment frames to resist lateral forces. This takes advantage of the ductility of moment frames and stiffness of braced frames while reducing their individual weaknesses. Dual systems require moment frames to bear a minimum percentage of total shear according to building codes.

Frame System

Framing systems are forms of construction utilized to resist vertical forces

(gravity) and lateral pressures (wind and earthquakes) against a building. The principal

structural system of a building is its framing system; foundation systems are covered

separately.

Framing systems carry and distribute the structural loads that occur above the surface

of the earth. They consist of the columns, beams, and shear walls that support the

structure. In some building systems, the floor slab is designed to assist in carrying the

lateral loads of the building, thereby becoming an integral part of the framing system.

Dual System

Dual system is a system in which the resistance against lateral forces is formed

through a series of shear walls or braced frames, with a series of moment frames. The

shear portion of each series is determined based on their lateral stiffness and their

interactions in all stories. Ductility and stiffness are respectively the characteristics of

moment frames and braced frames. However, great relative displacements in the upper

stories of the moment frames and great story shear in the lower stories of the braced

frames are considered their problems. Using the moment and braced dual system

increases the benefits of each, and decreases their inconvenience. According to the

design codes, a system is considered a dual system, if the moment frame bears at least

a specified percent of the total shear. In dual frames connection between beam and

column, column and foundation and between brace and beam is rigid. And connection

between brace and column is moment release.
