Rizal Script

Rizal was almost not admitted to Ateneo Municipal de Manila due to being late for registration and looking too frail. However, through the help of Manuel Jerez, a nephew of a martyred priest, Rizal was able to enroll. Rizal adopted the surname "Rizal" while at Ateneo to avoid suspicion from the Spanish authorities towards his family name, Mercado. The document then provides details about Jesuit education, noting their strict structure and emphasis on Latin, as well as background on Rizal's physical characteristics and some challenges he faced in his studies.

Holaa..

in this video presentation, we will encounter the life of rizal before being a
student at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila.

Hi. I am jose rizal, in full Jose protacio rizal Mercado y Alonso realonda, I was born on
june 19, 1861 at calamba laguna Philippines and died on December 30 1896 in manila.
I am a patriot, physician, a man of letters who was an inspiration to the Philippine
nationalist movement.

1. How was Rizal able to enroll at the Ateneo Municipal De Manila?

Rizal almost did not make it to the Ateneo because:

 He was late for registration

 Looked too frail for the rigors of Jesuit education.

However, through the intercession of Manuel Jerez, a nephew of Fr. Jose Burgos (one of
the three martyred priests known collectively as Gomburza), Rizal was finally accepted
into the Ateneo.Just like other universities, whenever there were problems, most people
use to ask for help to someone which called backer. And that backer was Manuel Jerez, a
nephew of Fr. Jose Burgos. So basically, Rizal used a connection to be able to enroll at
the Ateneo Municipal De Manila. Jose adopted the surname Rizal at the Ateneo because
their family name Mercado had come under suspicion of the Spanish authorities.

Additional information regarding to the school he should study to:

June 10, 1872- Jose, accompanied by Paciano, went to Manila to take the entrance
examinations on Christian Doctrine, arithmetic, and reading at the College of San Juan de
Letran, and passed them. His father was the first one who wished him to study at Letran
but he changed his mind and decided to send Jose at Ateneo instead.
(Chapter 4: Rizal’s life: Higher Education and Life Abroad, p 2.)

The system of education developed by the Jesuit order.

 Jesuit schools are divided into lower schools, or colleges (with a seven-year term of
instruction), and higher schools, or seminaries (with a six-year term of instruction).
 its principles and methodology were set forth in the special school regulations entitled Ratio  atqu
e instilutio studiorum  Societatis  Jesu, approved by the head (superior general) of the order,
 Aquaviva, in 1599.
 goal of Jesuit education is training for blind service to the church, absolute submission to the pop
e in Rome and the highest ranks of the Catholic Church.
 Principal attention in Jesuit schools was devoted to the study of Latin.
 In the two senior classes of a college a special subject called erudition was introduced; it included
excerpts of materials from geography, history, archaeology, and natural history.
 Later (during the 18th century) the need to broaden the practical education brought about the intr
oduction into the Jesuit school curriculum of systematic courses in history, geography, the native l
anguage of the country, and other subjects.
 Teachers as well as pupils were deprived of any independence whatsoever in their work; each ac
tion was stipulated by the school regulations
 By the beginning of the 18th century there were about 800 Jesuit educational institutions, includin
g more than 20 universities.

Jose Rizal was not physically blessed and strong child. He was frailed, sickly and undersized of his age 11
years old.

Jose Rizal was a native of the island of Luzon, of which Manila is the capital. He was therefore a Malay,
with the brown complexion, black eyes and straight, black hair which are the physical characteristics of
his race.

Rizal is not a perfect student in his study because just like everyone, he also has areas or disciplines that
he did not excel.

One of those are in his Spanish Language subject. During his first year in Ateneo, he took private lesson
in Santa Isabel College to improve his Spanish.

In the second half of his year in Ateneo, Rizal did not try enough to retain his academic supremacy
because he resented some remarks of his professors and so at the end of his first year in Ateneo he
places second, allthough all his grades were still marked "excellent".

In his third year in Ateneo he was dissatisfied in his grade even if it is remained excellent because he
won only a single medal in Latin as his classmate beat him in speaking Spanish.

Also, due to the imprisonment of Rizal's mother he was worried about his mothers' situation .
the significance of attending school is to cultivate our knowledge to make it perfect. In studying we
encounter different hindrances that will boost ourself to study hard and this hindrances will also be our
inspiration to do our best just like what Rizal's did.
