Practical Research 2 Lesson 2 3

1. Quantitative research uses variables to generate large amounts of data and identify patterns of behavior. 2. Variables can be categorical (e.g. gender) or quantitative and vary in terms of level of measurement. 3. There are different types of variables including independent variables (cause change), dependent variables (effect), mediating variables (come between), and moderator variables (change relationships under conditions).

Importance Of Quantitative Research

1. It is useful in generating large amounts of data

and in identifying the patterns of behavior of
various sectors in different settings.
2. If you are after objectivity, then quantitative
research may be adopted because it is less
prone to bias as the findings are expressed in
terms of numbers.
Importance Of Quantitative
Research
3. Quantitative research is adopted by
some researchers instead of the qualitative
approach due to the following reasons:
More reliable and objective
It uses statistics to generalize a finding
 Reduces and restructures a complex problem
to a limited number of variables
Importance Of Quantitative
Research
 Looks at relationships between variables and can
establish cause and effect in highly controlled
circumstances
 Tests theories and hypotheses
 Assumes that a sample is representative of the
population
 The subjectivity of the researcher is recognized less
 Less detailed that qualitative research.
Importance Of Quantitative
Research
 Lies greatly in the production of results that should
reflect precise measurements and an in-depth
analysis of data.
 Useful in obtaining an objective understanding of
people, things, places and events in the world.
 Enables people to study their surroundings as
objective they can.
Importance Of Quantitative Research
 Research directs us to inquire about the right information
by conducting further investigation of the actual condition.
It leads us to be cautious in giving results and findings by
proving lies and supporting the truth.
 Research empowers us with knowledge and discovers new
things and issues in life. It helps us solve problems in health,
crimes, business, technology and environment.
 Research facilitates learning as an opportunity to share
valuable information to others as a way of recognizing
various concerns for public awareness.

WHAT IS A VARIABLE?

 The foundation of quantitative research are

variables, but what are variables?
 Hefner (n,d) defined variables as any aspect of a
theory that can vary or change as part of the
interaction within the theory. It is anything than can
affect or change the results of the study. Every
study has variables because these are needed to
understand differences.
 An example of how the variables affect the results of the study
is the view ofteenagers about the importance of additional time
of studying at home. A gender, boy or girl, is a good variable
which will show the difference of the response or views of
studying at home. Some girls might find it very useful because
studying at home gives them enough time to understand and
learn deeper. While boys may disagree to this instance, because,
to them, time after school should be spent for leisure.
 With all that have been said, there are still lots of variables that
could affect the result of each study. We just have to be very
careful in choosing what to use to be able to get the reliable
information that we need to obtain.
TYPE OF VARIABLE (IN TERMS OF LEVEL OF
MEASUREMENT)

VARIABLE
Categorical Quantitative
Variable
CATEGORICAL VARIABLE
A variable that is made up of different types
of categories of a phenomenon

Example: Gender
Male or Female
QUANTITATIVE VARIABLE
 A variable that varies in degree or amount of phenomenon
ROLES OF VARIABLES
Independent Variable
Dependent Variable
Mediating Variable
Moderator Variable
 INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
 A variable that is presumed to cause
changes in another variable; casual variable
INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT
VARIABLE (IV) VARIABLE (DV)
Amount of Affects test
Studying grades
 DEPENDENT VARIABLE
 A variable that changes because of another
variable;
 the effect or outcome variable
INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT
VARIABLE (IV) VARIABLE (DV)
Amount of Affects test
Studying grades
 MEDIATING VARIABLE
 A variable that comes in between other variables;
 Helps to delineate the process through which variables affects one
another
 MODERATOR VARIABLE
 A variable that delineates how a relationship of interest
changes under different conditions or circumstances
