Gray To Binary and Binary To Gray Code Converter: Exp - No: Date: Aim: To Design and Implement A Circuit Which Converts

This document describes designing and implementing a circuit to convert between gray code and binary code. It discusses the need for code conversion between different digital systems. The experiment involves designing circuits using K-maps and IC gates to: 1) Convert binary code to gray code 2) Convert gray code to binary code 3) Convert between gray and binary codes using a select input Circuit diagrams and conclusions are presented to demonstrate the different code conversion designs.

GRAY TO BINARY and BINARY TO GRAY CODE CONVERTER

Exp.No: Date:

Aim: To design and implement a circuit which converts

1. gray code to binary code

2. binary to gray code
3. gray to binary or binary to gray using selective input

Apparatus: IC 7486, IC 7400, Trainer kit, connecting wires, DC supply.

Theory:
The availability of large variety of codes for the same discrete elements of
information results in the use of different codes in digital system. It is sometimes
necessary to use o/p of a system as i/p to the other. Thus a connection circuit is required
if the codes are different this connection circuit is called a code converter.

A code converter is defined as a circuit that makes two systems compatible

even if they use different binary codes. When there is continuous information with fixed
interval it is better to use gray code as it changes only in one bit if we move from one
code to other. Hence it is also known as reflected gray code. Binary codes are given by
b3, b2, b1, b0and gray codes are given by g3, g2, g1, g0

In this experiment we design different circuits for code conversions using the
truth table for BCD and gray codes given below.

Truth table:

Binary code Gray or reflected code

b3 b2 b1 b0 g3 g2 g1 g0
Design Using K-Map:

(a) Converting binary to gray:

(b) Converting Gray to Binary

(c) Gray to Binary/Binary to Gray with select input

Circuit diagrams:
a)Converting binary to gray

b) Converting Gray to Binary

(c) Gray to Binary/Binary to Gray with select input
