Quiz 4 - SKMM3523

An AV-belt pulley system rotates at 300 RPM supported by two thin ball bearings. The system includes a shaft made of annealed steel with a 30 mm diameter. Students are asked to: 1) Find belt tensions P1 and P2 using equilibrium of torque and draw the free body diagram. 2) Find bearing reactions using equilibrium of moments and forces and draw the moment diagram. 3) Determine the most critical stresses on the shaft.

Quiz 4 - Pulley System

AV-belt system is shown in the diagram below. The pulleys rotate at 300 RPM
and supported by 2 thin ball bearings at O and E. The shaft is made from an SAE
AISI 1015 A (annealed) rod machined to a diameter of 30 mm.

Given: Belt tension relationship (P1) = 1.5 x (P2)

1. Find Pl and P2 by equilibrium E ( T) = 0. Wh at is the torque acting along
the shaft? (HINTS: Drawfreebody diagram from side view)
2. Find the reactions at the bearings using E ( M) = 0, E ( F) = 0, and find the
mo ments at 0, A, B & C. Draw the moment diagram. HINTS: Draw freebody
diagrams from top view and front view)
3. Find the most critical stresses on the shaft.

HINTS: In beam deflection, a ll ball bearings (or thin bearings) support are
considered pin-joint.
