Safe School’s Training Summary

Preventative and Protective Factors (40 minutes):

This training focuses on professional boundaries with students and Erin’s Law. The training was

a video created with teachers from West Virginia. The video discusses their own experiences

with teachers who crossed a boundary with them. The training explains how teachers need to not

have conversations with students that are inappropriate and that they also should not add them on

Facebook, until they are out of school. There are certain professional boundaries that you must

maintain.

The video also discussed Erin’s Law. Erin was subjected to sexual assault as a child and explains

that because she did not learn about sexual abuse in school, she felt that she could not get help.

The law was passed in 2015 and helps schools provide educational tools to students to learn how

to recognize sexual assault happening. It also passed “handle with care” which is used to guide

staff members in how to handle students going through a traumatic experience.

Introduction and Overview of Sexual Abuse Prevention (65 minutes):

This training is another video on sexual abuse prevention. These educators discussed their own

experiences with sexual abuse and experiences in their schools. They highlight how we have to

pay attention to behavior changes in our students that may clue us to the fact that they are being

abused. We are mandatory reporters and we have a duty to our students to help them when we

can. They also discuss how it is important that teachers educate students on abuse and make

them aware that they can speak up about it.

Recognition and Response (90 minutes):

This is the final training in the abuse and neglect segment. This training discusses what will

happen when you are required to report abuse or neglect. There is a hotline number that you call

and the training speaks with someone who works at that hotline agency. They will pursue the

situation within at least 72 hours of the call being made. Once you report something, you are no

longer entitled to information regarding the case. This hotline is responsible for determining the

validity of the reports and whether it is something that needs to go beyond their agency.

Intro to Teams (40 minutes):

This training focuses on a basic overview of Microsoft Teams. Due to Covid-19, we are now

required to provide distance learning, and if cases get bad enough, full online instruction.

Microsoft Teams provides the opportunity to virtually connect with students, post assignments,

add files, and provide feedback to students.

IXL Teacher Training (90 minutes):

IXL is another platform that we are beginning to use for students while they are home. IXL

provides practice to students on specific subjects in Math, English, and Spanish. IXL is

connected to most textbooks and can help students align their reading with practice skills. IXL is

also aligned with the West Virginia State Standards. This program asks questions and as the

students get them correct, it increases in intensity. Teachers are able to monitor student progress

and can see what questions they are struggling with.

Microsoft Teams 101 (90 minutes):

This training is another in depth look at the ends and outs of Microsoft Teams. The first area he

discussed was safety. Schools work on FERPA, COPA, and SIPA. These guarantee student

information remains safe and secure. Using online platforms can create a grey area with student

safety that must be addressed. One of the ways they have addressed this is by disabling personal
communication between students and also between staff and students. The next step of the

training looks at how to do assignments, how to add files, how to keep students from editing

word documents that you provide, and how to do virtual meetings with students.

Performance and Evaluation of School Personnel (50 minutes):

This training is related to WVDE Policy 5310. This policy is related to evaluations of all school

personnel. The state has adopted a uniform way of evaluating staff members. Upon the

evaluation, if it is poor, educators will get a chance to fix any mistakes.

Expected Behavior in Safe and Supportive Schools (50 minutes):

This training was related to Policy 4373. This focuses on ensuring that all staff and students are

provided a safe and supportive school environment. This policy is very extensive and covers

student protections such as freedom of expression, no unreasonable search or seizure, ensuring

reporting of child abuse and neglect, and dress codes. The policy also gives guidelines for

suspension and expulsion. It provides alternative education scenarios. This guideline would be

very useful for administrators when dealing with student questions and discipline concerns.

Local School Improvement Council (40 minutes):

This training is relating to WVDE Policy 2200. This policy is all about the Local School

Improvement Council (LSIC). This council is comprised of school personnel, parents, business

owners, and community members. This council focuses on school improvement by making

recommendations through strategic planning and ideas. This council can meet about topics

ranging from sports to building maintenance. In order to serve on the council, you must be

elected.
