Mat1011 - Problemsheet - 3-Maxima Minima and Taylors Theorem

1. The document contains 20 problems related to maxima, minima, and Taylor's theorem. The problems cover topics like proving functions are injective or strictly monotonic, finding local extrema of functions, using Taylor's theorem to find approximations of functions, and expanding functions in Taylor series. 2. Several problems involve using concepts like monotonicity, injectivity, local extrema, and Taylor series expansions to analyze functions, find critical points, approximate values, or expand functions as series. 3. The problems progress from simpler concepts involving maxima, minima and properties of functions, to more advanced applications of Taylor's theorem to find approximations, expand functions as series, and prove certain mathematical statements.

Problem sheet- 3: Maxima, Minima and Taylor’s

theorem

October 2020

1. Prove that if f is strictly monotonic on an interval I, then f is injective

on I.
2. Let f be a continuous function defined on an interval I. Show that, if f
is injective, then it is strictly monotonic on I.
3. The function f : R → R defined by f (x) = 1+x+x2 has neither maximum
nor minimum at any point. Why?
4. Find the points at which the function f : R → R defined by f (x) =
1 − x − x3 attain local maxima and local minima.
5. Find the local extremum points of the function in its domain (i) f (x) =
x2 x
(1−x)3 and (ii) 2 − x.

6. Decompose the number 36 into two factors such that the sum of their
squares is the least possible.
7. Examine if f has a local maximum or a local minimum at 0.
(i) f (x) = x − [x] (ii) |x| + |x − 1|
8. Determine the altitude of a right circular cone of greatest possible volume
that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius r.
9. Determine the altitude of a right circular cone of greatest possible volume
that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius r.
10. Show that the height of closed cylinder of given volume and least surface
is equal to its diameter.
11. Find the point on the curve y = logx, tangent at which is parallel to the
chord joining the points (1, 0) and (e, 1).
12. Separate the interval in which f (x) = x + x1 , is increasing or decreasing.
13. Find approximate values of sinx, cosx, tan−1 x at the point x = 1/2 using
Taylor’s formula and find the estimates for the errors for different values
of n.

14. Use Taylor’s theorem to show that 1 + x2 − x8 < 1 + x < 1 + x2 , if x > 0.
15. Expand f (x) = x5 − x4 + x3 − x2 + x − 1 in powers of (x − 1) and find
f (0.99).
16. Expand 2x3 + 3x2 − 8x + 7 in terms of (x − 2).
Ans.: 19 + 28(x − 2) + 15(x − 2)2 + 2(x − 2)3
x 26 3
17. If x3 + y 3 + xy − 1 = 0, prove that y = 1 − 3 − 81 x − ···.
x2
18. Using Maclaurin’s series, prove that ax = 1 + xloga + 2! (loga)

+ ···.
x3
19. Prove that ex cosx = 1 + x − 3 + ···.
x4 x6
20. Prove that exsinx = 1 + x2 + 3 + 120 + ···.
