Techniques in Separating Mixtures: Self-Learning Module

The document is a science module on techniques for separating mixtures. It contains 3 activities for students to learn different separation techniques through hands-on experiments. The activities cover separating mixed nuts by picking, separating salt and sugar using a strainer, and separating cooked rice from water by sedimentation and decantation. The module teaches students about techniques including picking, sieving, sedimentation, decantation, and evaporation. It aims to help students understand and demonstrate how mixtures can be separated.

LEARNING RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT SECTION

Project EL AR: Enhance Learning thru Adequate Resources
GUIDE FOR THE LEARNER, PARENT, GUARDIAN
AND LEARNING FACILITATOR

To You, Learner:

Welcome to Science 6 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Techniques in

Separating Mixtures! This module was made to give you with fun and mean-
ingful time for guided and independent learning at your convenience. You
will be able to process the contents of this Module while being an active
learner.

To You, Parent/s, Guardian/s and Learning Facilitator/s:

This Module was collaboratively developed and reviewed by the

teachers, school heads and supervisors of DepEd Division of Cabanatuan
City to assist you in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming their different constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to

use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are ex-
pected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in
the module.

This Module is about the different techniques in separating

mixture. Fun filled activities are included as you do your self-
exploration in gaining new knowledge and skills on how to deal
in separating mixtures as part of our daily living.

2
OBJECTIVES:

1. Perform an experiment to determine the different techniques in

separating mixtures.

2. Differentiate the different techniques in separating

mixtures.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Presentation of the Lesson/Topic

Have you tried to cook rice by yourself ? What was your most unforgettable
experience ? Did you wash the rice carefully and thoroughly? How did you separate the
rice from the water ?
There are different techniques to separate the components of a mixture.

Sieving

Picking

Evaporation

Decantation

Different Techniques in Separating Mixtures

1.Hand Picking/Picking– it is the method in which substance can be separated with the
help of hand. This method of handpicking can be used for separating slightly larger
sized impurities like the pieces of dirt, stone, and husk from wheat, rice or pulses . The
quantity of such impurities is usually not very large. In such situations, we find
that handpicking is a convenient method of separating substances .
2. Sieving— Mixtures with big and fine components can be separated by sieving. Sieving
involves using a strainer or a big screen to separate the components of solid mixtures.
The strainer allows only the fine particles through it and prevents the larger ones. The
sieving technique is used in separating fine sand from rocks in the mixtures of gravel
and sand.
3. Sedimentation and Decantation—Mixtures with undissolved solute can be separated
through sedimentation and decantation. Allow the heavier object to settle for some
time. The solute will slowly settle at the bottom. This is sedimentation. Following this, the
solvent can be gradually poured to a different container without unsettling the settled
particles to separate them totally. This method is called decantation. The solid leftovers
are called precipitate. This technique can also be used in washing rice and leaving be-
hind its granules.
4. Evaporation –It is a process that involves heating, allowing one component to
completely change into gaseous phase while leaving the other component as
residue. This technique can also be used in recovering salt from a salt water mixture
(salt solution ) . In this process, water is turned into gaseous phase while salt is left
behind as residue.

ACTIVITY PROPER

Since we have already gained knowledge about the different techniques in sepa-
rating the components of mixtures, let us have some fun activities. Be sure to seek the
help of your parents while doing the activities. Follow the directions carefully and be
able to take down notes every details that you might observe.
ACTIVITY 1: To choose or not to choose? ( Day 1)
Problem: How can the mixed nuts be separated?
Materials : plate, Dingdong Mixed Nuts or any variety
Procedures:
1. Open the mixed nuts. Put it on the plate.
2. Choose your favorite nut by picking it with your hand and put it on the saucer.
3. Separate the other components by grouping the same kind of nuts.
Questions :
1. What kind of mixture do you have ?______________________
2. What are the different components of your mixtures?
