Perimeter Lesson Plan 3
Perimeter Lesson Plan 3
Learning Objective: Students will be able to find the perimeter of a given geometric figure.
Introduction:
______________________________________________________________________________
First Stage
- Assess prior knowledge on what the students remember about the different counting
techniques when finding a perimeter of a rectangle.
- Ask the students clarifying questions before moving on.
- Start by showing your students how to use unit squares to count the perimeter units of a
figure. For example, find an book in the classroom to measure.
- Using the cheese crackers, model how students would find the perimeter of the book by
placing crackers side-by-side, all around the book.
Write the unit measurements on the board, and then ask the class to find the perimeter.
For example, if the object you measured is 3 crackers on one side, by 7 crackers on another side,
the perimeter (total) would be 3 + 3 + 7 + 7, or 20 crackers.

Third Stage/Individual
- Once the steps have been clarified I will ask each student to raise their hand if they are
ready to begin finding a house perimeter.
- Handout the worksheet that is attached to this lesson.
- First, explaining in detail the directions in finding the perimeter of the houses.
- Scaffolding around the room and answering questions if applied.
- Reminding the students that they can shade with colored pencils, use mini manipulatives,
and cheese crackers to help their counting and showing how much quantity is shown in
the rectangle

Student Assessment/Evaluation
- Have several students present their method for finding the perimeter of one of the
rectangles.
- Verbal responses to questions and participation in activities will provide feedback on how
well students understand the concepts.
