Perimeter Lesson Plan 3

This lesson plan teaches 6th-8th grade students about perimeter by having them find the perimeter of rectangles using crackers and mini manipulatives. The lesson begins with an introduction that reviews the definition of perimeter and has students find the perimeter of shapes drawn on the board. Students then work in groups to build a "house" shape out of crackers and find its perimeter. Finally, students complete a worksheet independently, finding the perimeters of different house shapes by counting sides and using the tools provided. Their understanding is assessed by having some students present their work.

Perimeter Lesson Plan #3

Subject: Math: Special Education: Sixth-Eighth Grade

Lesson Topic: Perimeter of Rectangles
Length of class: 35-40 minutes
Materials: Crackers, math journals, worksheet, mini square manipulatives,
pencil, and colored pencils.
State Core Standard Alignment: Standard 3.MD.8: Solve real-world and
mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given
the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same
perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Learning Objective: Students will be able to find the perimeter of a given geometric figure.

Introduction:

1. Ask for a volunteer to tell you the definition of perimeter.

2. Write the definition on the board.
3. Draw a few figures on the board, along with the lengths of their sides.
4. Challenge students to find the perimeter of the geometrical figures you’ve drawn.
5. Each time a student answers, correctly or incorrectly, explain the reasoning behind each
figure’s perimeter.

______________________________________________________________________________

First Stage

- Assess prior knowledge on what the students remember about the different counting
techniques when finding a perimeter of a rectangle.
- Ask the students clarifying questions before moving on.
- Start by showing your students how to use unit squares to count the perimeter units of a
figure. For example, find an book in the classroom to measure.
- Using the cheese crackers, model how students would find the perimeter of the book by
placing crackers side-by-side, all around the book.

Write the unit measurements on the board, and then ask the class to find the perimeter.
For example, if the object you measured is 3 crackers on one side, by 7 crackers on another side,
the perimeter (total) would be 3 + 3 + 7 + 7, or 20 crackers.

Time: 5-10 Minutes

Second Stage

- Gather any clarifying questions before moving on.

- Ask students to make a 3x5 array (rectangle) and a triangle on top, making a house shape
with the cheese crackers.
- As the class creates the house, ask students to find the perimeter when they’re done, and
record the perimeter in their math journals.
- Once the class is done, demonstrate how to solve for the perimeter of the house by using
crackers, colored pencils, and mini manipulatives.

Time: 5-10 Minutes

______________________________________________________________________________

Third Stage/Individual

- Once the steps have been clarified I will ask each student to raise their hand if they are
ready to begin finding a house perimeter.
- Handout the worksheet that is attached to this lesson.
- First, explaining in detail the directions in finding the perimeter of the houses.
- Scaffolding around the room and answering questions if applied.
- Reminding the students that they can shade with colored pencils, use mini manipulatives,
and cheese crackers to help their counting and showing how much quantity is shown in
the rectangle

Time: 10-15 Minutes

______________________________________________________________________________

Student Assessment/Evaluation

- Have several students present their method for finding the perimeter of one of the
rectangles.
- Verbal responses to questions and participation in activities will provide feedback on how
well students understand the concepts.

Time: 5-10 Minutes
