Tute 08 Road Construction & Motorcycle

This document discusses topics related to road construction and motorcycle safety. It includes questions about construction sequencing, equipment used for different excavation and material transport tasks, production calculations for excavators and loaders, erosion control methods for road batters, drain inverts and culverts, practicing sustainability in road design and construction, and ways engineers can help ensure motorcycle safety.

Tutorial 8: Road Construction & Motorcycle Issues

TUTORIAL 7: COORDINATION, ROAD CONSTRUCTION, MATERIAL PROPERTIES

1. Draw a flowchart to show the construction sequence from site clearing to pavement sealing. For
each stage of the chart, describe
(a) the activities that are carried out.
(b) the equipment used to perform the activity.

2. What earthworks equipment would be used for:

(a) Laying small diameter drainage pipes (up to 375mm diameter) for depths less than
1.2m, with natural backfill?
(b) Laying sewer pipe about 3m depth with crushed rock surround and natural backfill?
(c) Laying drainage pipes greater than 600mm diameter with crushed rock backfill? (e.g a
road crossing)
(d) Excavating and transporting sandy loam within the site over a distance of about 1km, in
grades of
a. 2% - 4%
b. 10% - 15%?
(e) Excavating and transporting sandy loam to a site about 2km away over public roads?
(f) Ripping sandstone for excavation and transport to a site over 10km away?
(g) Removing a 50mm layer of excess crushed rock from a strip of road 3m by 80m, to
transport to another area on site?

3. An excavator loading a truck has a cycle time of 20 seconds and a rated capacity of 1.5m3. The
material is hard dry clay having a swell of 30%. Due to the nature of the material, the heaped
capacity is not achieved. Actual capacity = 80% heaped capacity.
[Please show your working steps clearly.]
(a) Calculate possible production.
(b) The operator is rated as excellent and site conditions are rated as fair and job
management conditions are rated as good. Find likely production (if M = 0.9)
(167 BCM/hr, 93 BCM/hr)

4. A loader (track) of rated capacity 2m3 & static tipping load 12447kg is loading in situ clay of swell
30%, ρ= 1600 kg/m3 (in situ). The cycle time, loading to a truck, is 0.5 min.
(a) Find possible loader production in BCM/hour
(b) Check the maximum tipping weight.
(c) If truck delay causes a 0.2 min loss each cycle, what is the possible production?
(184 BCM/hr, 26% STL, 132 BCM/hr)

5. Discuss the erosion mechanism and apply the methods of controlling erosion in a road project for
the following elements:
(a) Batters
(b) Drain inverts
(c) Culverts

6. Discuss how to practice sustainability in road design and construction.

7. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable road users. How can engineers ensure their safety?
