Determining Roots Using The Methods of Soving Quadratic Equation

This module teaches learners how to determine the roots of quadratic equations using different methods: extracting square roots, factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. It provides examples of solving quadratic equations with each method and activities for learners to practice finding the roots. The objectives are for learners to be able to determine the roots of quadratic equations and illustrate them using appropriate representations.

EQUATION
I.
II. Introduction

Assalamu alaikom students This module provides you with

opportunities to relate and connect previously learned mathematics
concepts to the new lesson, solving quadratic equations by extracting
square roots, by factoring, by completing the square and by using quadratic
formula. As you go through this lesson, you will think of this important
question: “How does finding solutions of quadratic equations facilitate in
solving real-life problems and in making decisions?”

At the end of this module, the learners are able to:

Objectives
III. A. Determines the roots of quadratic equations.
B. Illustrates quadratic equations using appropriate representations

IV. Instruction for Learners

DO READ!!
Student you need to answer first the Pre-Test before going to other
activities. Do the activities in order as they appear in this module. Read the
directions for each activity and answer them in your notebook.

V. Pre- Test

Questions

1. How did you find each root?

2. Which method of solving quadratic equations is the easiest way for you? Why
VI. Learning Activities

A. CONCEPT

Please read the lesson below and study carefully the examples.

Determines the roots of a quadratic equations.

Determining the roots of quadratic equations means finding the roots or solutions of
a quadratic with no specific method to be applied. You can use, extracting square roots,
factoring , completing the square and by using quadratic formula. So, it is a choice of a
solver what method more appropriate to use and what he feels more comfortably and take
less of time to solve the problem.

Illustrative examples:

Determine the roots of the following quadratic equations.

(Now let me show you to determine the roots using different methods.)

1.) x2 = 4 x2 = 4

By Extracting By Factoring
Solution: Solution:
√𝑥 2 = √4 extract both sides since
2
x2 – 4 = 0 write in standard form
it is written in x = k
x=±2 the value of x ( x – 2 )( x + 2 ) factors
x – 2 = 0, x + 2 = 0 equate each factor to 0
x = ±𝟐 roots x=2,x=-2 values of x
= x=2,x=-2 roots
Type equation here.

x2 = 4

By Quadratic formula
Solution:
x2 = 4 x2 – 4 = 0 : write in standard form
a=1,b=0 ,c=-4 : identify the values of a , b and c.
−𝒃± √𝒃𝟐 − 𝟒𝒂𝒄

Note: The solution for using completing the square is not applicable since the given quadratic
equation has no middle term.
ANOTHER EXAMPLES
1. Determine the roots of the quadratic equation x 2 – 8x – 9 = 0.
By Factoring By Completing By Quadratic Formula
x2 – 8x – 9 = 0. x2 – 8x = 9 a=1 ,b=-8,c=-9

2. ( 𝑥 + 5 )2 = 36
By Extracting By Factoring
√(𝑥 + 5 )2 = √36 ( x + 5 )2 = 36
x+ 5= ±6 x2 + 10x + 25 = 36
x+5=6 : x+5=-6 x2 + 10x – 11 = 0

x = 1 : x = - 11 x – 1 = 0 : x + 11 = 0

x = 1 : x = - 11

By Completing By Quadratic Formula

( x + 5 )2 = 36 ( x + 5 )2 = 36
