A. Introduction What I need to know?

The hand is one of the most symbolc parts of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
1|Page
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

In this part, the content of the lesson will be presented to the learner.

The learning objectives will also introduced to guide the learners on the targets
What I know?
Learners will answer the pre-test provided in the module. This pre-test
consists of 40 items and covers all the topics for first quarter. ( The pre-
test was inserted in the module)

How did you find the pre-test?

You are doing great, my dear
B. Development What’s in?
Learners will read and complete each analogy by supplying the missing
word and figure. They are going to try answering the Learning Task 1 and 2 on
page 6 of their English Quarter 1 PIVOT Learner’s Material.
Now, would you like to know more about the types of analogies?
What’s new?
The learners will read and understand the following concepts about
analogy for them to fully master the competency at hand.
Learners will do the following as they are guided in the module:
 Self-learning about analogy and its origin together with the given examples
 Learners will discover the new words and determine the meaning of
unfamiliar words.

Analogy comes from the Greek word analogia which means ‘proportion or equality of
ratios’. An analogy is the comparison through which the ideas or things are compared to
each other. Through Analogy, the things, which are different from each other, are
compared. When we use an analogy, we show similarity or likeness between things in
some circumstances or of likeness or effects when things are otherwise different. For
example:
Temperature is to thermometer as time is to clock.
The first pair of words gives the idea that temperature can be measured by a
thermometer.

In the same way, time can be identified or shown by means of a clock. the
relationship between the two pairs of words is similarity. Analogy describes or clarifies an
idea by making comparison between two things.

It is read this way:

Temperature is to thermometer as to time is to clock

The analogy can be written as:

temperature: thermometer: time: clock.
It always contains two pairs of words. Solving analogies help you to develop critical
thinking.

What is it?
Learners will read a more informative discussion about types of
Analogies and examples. They should read and copy in their English
notebooks all about Analogy and its types on pages 7-8.

See: ENGLISH PIVOT Learner’s Material pages 7-8

An analogy explains the relationship between words and ideas. It may

be comparison to show similarity between two or more objects
on a certain limited number of features or details. The
relationship may be shown in various ways.

The Types of Analogies:

1. Synonyms or similarity
Synonyms are words that mean the same thing while synonym analogies
2|Page
consist of two pairs of synonyms. Since, the first pair of words means the same
thing, so the second pair must mean the same thing too.
Example: delay: stall:: allow : permit
( delay is to stall as to allow is to permit)
2. Antonyms or contrast
Antonyms are words that mean the opposite, and so
antonym analogies consist of two pairs of opposites.
Example: whisper: yell:: tame : wild
( whisper is opposite of yell as to tame is the opposite of wild)

3. Part to Whole
In part/whole analogies, the first word of each pair names a specific item, and the
second word names a more general item that includes the first. It contains the
part, or section of something larger, and the whole, or the entire entity.

Example: home: neighborhood: ant: colony (home is a part of neighborhood as

to ant is a part of colony)

4. Performer and Action

In this analogy, both the performer and action are mentioned.
Example: teacher: teach: actor: act (teacher is to teach as to actor is to act)

5. Degree of Intensity
In this analogy, it shows greater or lesser extent of something.
Example: puddle: pond:: cool: icy ( puddle is less of a pond while cool is less of
being icy)

6. Function Analogy
In this analogy, it tells us how something work
Example: knife: cut :: pen: write (knife is to cut as to pen is to write)

7.Classification Analogy
In this analogy, it puts something in a category
Example: ballet: dance :: frog: amphibian ( ballet is a kind of dance as to frog
is a kind of amphibian)

8. Cause and Effect

In this analogy two things are related with each other, one is the cause
and the other one is the consequences of the cause.
Example: fire: burn :: read: learn ( fire causes burn while read causes
learning
So, let’s proceed to the activities.
