What I know?

test was inserted in the module)
Analogy comes from the Greek word analogia which means ‘proportion or equality of
ratios’. An analogy is the comparison through which the ideas or things are compared to
each other. Through Analogy, the things, which are different from each other, are
compared. When we use an analogy, we show similarity or likeness between things in
some circumstances or of likeness or effects when things are otherwise different. For
example:
Temperature is to thermometer as time is to clock.
The first pair of words gives the idea that temperature can be measured by a
thermometer.
In the same way, time can be identified or shown by means of a clock. the
relationship between the two pairs of words is similarity. Analogy describes or clarifies an
idea by making comparison between two things.
1. Synonyms or similarity
Synonyms are words that mean the same thing while synonym analogies
2|Page
consist of two pairs of synonyms. Since, the first pair of words means the same
thing, so the second pair must mean the same thing too.
Example: delay: stall:: allow : permit
( delay is to stall as to allow is to permit)
2. Antonyms or contrast
Antonyms are words that mean the opposite, and so
antonym analogies consist of two pairs of opposites.
Example: whisper: yell:: tame : wild
( whisper is opposite of yell as to tame is the opposite of wild)
3. Part to Whole
In part/whole analogies, the first word of each pair names a specific item, and the
second word names a more general item that includes the first. It contains the
part, or section of something larger, and the whole, or the entire entity.
5. Degree of Intensity
In this analogy, it shows greater or lesser extent of something.
Example: puddle: pond:: cool: icy ( puddle is less of a pond while cool is less of
being icy)
6. Function Analogy
In this analogy, it tells us how something work
Example: knife: cut :: pen: write (knife is to cut as to pen is to write)
7.Classification Analogy
In this analogy, it puts something in a category
Example: ballet: dance :: frog: amphibian ( ballet is a kind of dance as to frog
is a kind of amphibian)
