SSOW PROCEDURE

GRASS CUTTING
Non-Operational Areas (Operation Camp, CTTC, CEC)

Before you commence work, you must have:


· A copy of this procedure;
· An Application to Perform Work (ATPW) signed up by the Area Authority to carry out the work;
· A clear brief from your Supervisor on the task and the extent and boundaries of the task;
· Perform a Toolbox Talk prior to start work activity and before handling chemicals an

Conditions of use
· This Procedure & ATPW must be returned to Permit Office at the end of shift.
· This Procedure & ATPW is ONLY valid for one shift.
· Ensure minimal disruption to adjacent persons / residents

Hazards
You may encounter the following hazards:
· Hazardous substances.
· Inexperienced personnel (task or location)
· Moving machinery
· Slipping hazards
· Tripping hazards
· Snakes
· Severe/ adverse weather condition
· Waste

Controls
You must ensure that the following control measures are taken:

· Notify all personnel in premises prior to commencing work 


· Grass cutting activities time to be agreed with Camp Coordinators (Night Shift Sleeping)
· Mower must be turned off every time when refuel
· Never leave a mower running without turning it off
· Be sure to store fuel in recommended and approved containers to prevent fire hazards.
· Remove all objects and debris from grass to ensure that flying debris doesn’t get flown up to hit the operator
· Do not allow unauthorised personnel to operate a lawn mower
· Be sure that the operator is capable to handle the speeds of a self propelled mower.
· Wear protective gears (PPE) at all times, especially on the feet
· Work to stop when Performing Authority is not at worksite
· Enforce frequent rest breaks and provision of abundant, cool drinking water
· Keep your eyes open in snake infested areas - look where you are stepping
· PA to make sure the work areas left clean and tidy upon completion of work activity
· Inspect the lawn mower before each use for safety, vibration and loose bolts.
· Adhere COSHH Assessment and ensure all workers are aware of this assessment
· Check work site for potential tripping hazards
· Keep worksite free of slip hazards

Limitations of use
This procedure does not cover:
· Work out with the area stipulated on ATPW authorised by area authority.
· Work in which the hazards are not as defined above.

Approval Valid Until: 24/09/2011


This SSOW Procedure is approved subject to the Area Authority specifying the period within which work may take
place, and issuing a APTW Certificate before work commences.
