Measurements Instrumintations 1

This document provides an overview of a course on measurements and instrumentation. The course covers general measurement systems including sensing elements, signal conditioning, processing, and presentation. It evaluates students with exams, assignments, and projects. Key topics include measurement definitions, measurement system structure and performance, error analysis, sensors, and signal conditioning elements. The example temperature measurement system uses a thermocouple transducer, amplifier, ADC, and 7-segment display.

Chapter 1
Measurement and Instrumentation Definitions:

Measurement:
• A method to obtain information regarding the physical values of
the variable.

Instrumentation:
• Devices used in measurement system.

Physical Quantity:
• Variable such as pressure, temperature, voltage, mass, length,
etc.

5
Chapter 1: General Measurement System
Purpose of measurement system and its performance

input output
Process Measurement System observer
True value Measured value
of variable of variable

Process: system which generates information needed to be measured

(car, human heart, electric circuit, chemical reaction, etc.)

Information Variables: variables generated by the process

(acceleration, velocity, force, level, density, PH, humidity, current,
voltage, power, gas intensity, etc.)

Purpose of measurement system and its performance

input output
Process Measurement System observer
True value Measured value
of variable of variable

Observer: a person who needs the measured information.

Measurement System: links the observer to the process by measuring

the information variable and present its value as a number, chart, picture,
etc.

Chapter 1: General Measurement System…
Purpose of measurement system and its performance

input output
Process Measurement System observer
True value Measured value
of variable of variable

Input: the input to the measurement system is the true value of the
variable.

Output: the output of the measurement system is the measured value of

the variables.

The Accuracy: is defined as the closeness of the measured value to the

true value. 8

Signal Signal Data

input Sensing output
Conditioning Processing Presentation
Element Element
Element Element
true value measured value

Signal Processing Element: takes the output of the signal conditioning

element and convert it to a form more suitable for presentation, such as,
ADC: Analog-to-digital convertor, Computation, calculation, etc.…

Data Presentation Element: used to present the measured value in a

form recognized by the observer, such as, LCD, 7-segment, pointer
scale, CRT, chart recorder, etc.

Temperature System Example

Thermocouple Amplifier ADC 7-Segment

Transducer:
Manufactured package that gives an output voltage corresponding to
input variable, such as microphone, speaker, etc.
