Lecture - 6: Orthographic Views of Frustum & Truncated Solids

The document discusses different types of truncated and frustum solids. It provides examples of drawing orthographic views of these solids in different orientations and when cut by planes parallel or inclined to the base. It includes 6 examples of drawing the top, front, and side views of frustum and truncated pyramids and cones with varying dimensions, orientations, and cutting locations.

Orthographic views of Frustum & Truncated solids

FRUSTUM & TRUNCATED SOLIDS
FRUSTUM
When a pyramid or a cone is cut by a cutting plane parallel to its base,
the remaining portion thus obtained after removing the top portion is
called the Frustum
FRUSTUM & TRUNCATED SOLIDS
TRUNCATED SOLID

When a solid (prism/cylinder/pyramid/cone) is cut by a cutting

plane inclined to its base (not parallel), the remaining portion thus
obtained after removing the top portion is called the Truncated
Solid.
1. A square pyramid of 2 inch side and 3 inch height is resting on H.P. such that its base
is on H.P. The pyramid is cut at a height 1.5 inch from its base such that the cutting
plane is parallel to its base. Draw the top, front and left view of the object.

Draw the Front view of the square pyramid

Draw the top view of a square pyramid

Draw projection lines from EF &
Draw an offset of ABCD line on
GH cutting edge point on top
front view at a height 1.5 inch
view.

Cutting lines will

intersect the edge lines
OA at E
OB at F
OC at G
OD at H
Connect E F G H sequentially Hatch the face EFGH with straight
line aligned at 450
Now the top and front view of frustum of a rectangular pyramid
is obtained
2. A square pyramid having 1.5 inch sides and 3 inch height rests on H.P such that one
of the edges of the base makes an angle of 45 with the V.P. The pyramid is cut by a
horizontal plane at 1.5 inch above from the base. Draw its top, front and left view.
How to get
projection of F &
H points on Top
view ?
On top view draw a line parallel to AD through E and
another line parallel to BC through G
3. A square pyramid of 2 inch side and 3 inch height is resting on H.P. A cutting plane
making an angle of 45° with the horizontal, truncates the pyramid in such a way that the
axis of the pyramid is cut at a height 2 inch from base. Draw the top, front and left view of
the object.

A 45° inclined line is

drawn at a height 2
inch from base
through pyramid
axis line.
Draw projection lines through intersecting points between
cutting plane and pyramid edges on the top view
4. A Frustum of a hexagonal pyramid of 2 inch side and 4 inch height is resting on H.P.
such that an edge of the base is making an angle of 30° with the vertical plane.
Consider the height of the frustum is 2.5 inch. Draw the top view and front view of the
object.
5. A hexagonal pyramid of 2 inch side and 4 inch height is resting on H.P. such that an
edge of the base makes an angle of 30° with the vertical plane. Now the pyramid is
being truncated at a height 1.5 inch from base (axis height). The truncated plane is
inclined 450 with horizontal plane. Draw front and top view of the object.
How to obtain
cutting point on OC
and OF on the Top
View???
Of= Oa’ =Ob’ = Oc
6. Consider a Frustum of a hexagonal pyramid with each sides of base equal to 2 inch &
height 4 inch. An edge of the base makes an angle of 30° with the vertical plane.
Now the base of the frustum is rotated 60° (clockwise) from horizontal plane. Draw the
top view and front view of the object.
Now Draw its Right View
