Decision Making
A decision is a choice made between two or more available
alternatives. Decision making is the process of choosing the best
alternatives for reaching objectives.
(Samuel C. Certo, 2003)

Decision making can be defined as a process choosing between


alternatives to achieved a goal. It is the process by which an
individual chooses one alternative from several to achieve a desired
objective.

(Manmohan Prasad, 2003)

The Nature of Decision Making


It is the choice of the best among the alternative after
evaluation through critical appraisal.

A mental process because the final selection is made after


thoughtful consideration.

Involves rationality because through decisions an endeavor is


made to better ones happiness.

Aims at achieving the objectives of the organization.


Decision Making Process

According to Baker..

< efficient decision-making involves a series of steps that require


the input of information at different stages of the process, as well as
a process for feedback.”

Steps in Decision Making

1. Identify the problem

2. Diagnosing the problem

3. Discover the alternative courses of action

4. Evaluate the alternative

5. Select the best alternative

6. Implementing and follow up action


If manager’s plan hasn’t resolved the
problem, he needs to figure out what went wrong. A
manager may accomplish this by asking the
following questions.
• Was the wrong alternative selected?
• Was the correct alternative selected, but
implemented improperly?
• Was the original problem identified
incorrectly?
• Has the implemented alternative been
given enough time to be successful?
• By following this stepwise approach, you can
think of the bigger picture and make the right call.
Since the concept can be implemented in almost
every field, people from different domains can use
it. You can educate them about the major steps
involved in decision making and help them make
the right decisions.
