Experiment#6 DC Circuit Analysis: Electrical Circuits Lab 0905212

- The document describes an electrical circuits lab experiment involving DC circuit analysis using mesh analysis, nodal analysis, superposition principle, and Thevenin's theorem. Key steps include setting up a circuit, measuring voltages and currents, applying circuit analysis techniques, and verifying concepts like maximum power transfer. - Mesh and nodal analysis are applied to a circuit, and measurements are taken to solve the mesh and nodal equations. Superposition is then used by setting one source to zero at a time and comparing results. - Thevenin's theorem is verified by measuring open circuit voltage and short circuit current, and finding equivalent resistance using two methods. Maximum power transfer is explored by varying a load resistance

Part A: Mesh and Nodal Analysis
Consider the circuit in the figure below

- Assemble the circuit with the following values:

V b1 V b2 R1 R2 R3 R4 Rl
16 V 24 V 3.3 k Ω 260 Ω 1k Ω 680 Ω 150 Ω

- Your circuit should be similar to the figure below.

- Connect the circuit in TinkerCAD and insert a snapshot of the circuit below
- Connect the multimeters to measure the values of the quantities in the table below:

Va Vb I1 I2 I3
4.26 V 10.7 V 5.27mA 8.8 -19.5
Table 1

- Substitute the measured values of resistances, source voltages, and mesh currents into the
mesh equations, group all terms in every equation on one side and compare their sum with
zero. Explain any discrepancies.
ANSWER IN THE
LAST PAGE
- Substitute the measured values of resistances and voltages into the nodal equations, group
all terms in every equation on one side and compare their sum with zero. Explain any
discrepancies.
Part B: Superposition Principle
For the same circuit used in Part A, perform the following:

- Set V b 1 in the power supply to zero.

- Repeat the measurements of all the previous quantities. Take a snap shot of the circuit and
insert it below

- Write down the measurements in the table below

V 'a V 'b I '1 I '2 I '3

2.54 7.13V -7.13mA -7.9 mA -24.8 mA
Table 2
- Set V b 2 to zero.
- Repeat the measurements of all the previous quantities. Take a snap shot of the circuit and
insert it below
- Write down the measurements in the table below

V 'a' V 'b' I ''1 I ''2 I ''3

1.72 3.58 12.4mA 16.7mA 5.27
Table 3

- Add the values of Table 2 and Table 3 and record them in the table below

V 'a +V 'a' V 'b +V 'b' I '1+ I '1' I '2+ I '2' I '3+ I '3'
4.26 V 10.7V 5.27 8.8 19.5

- Compare those results with the results in Part A, what do you conclude?

SUM OF CURRENTS AND VOLTAGES USING SUPERPOSITION METHOD WHEN

REPLACING EACH VOLTAGE WITH A SHORT CIRCUIT EACH AT A TIME IS
EQUIVALENT TO RESULTS USING MESH AND NODAL ANALYSIS

Write Answer Here

Part C: Thevenin Theorem
Using the same circuit above, we wish to verify Thevenin’s theorem. There are two methods.
To do so, follow the procedure below:

Method (1):
- Remove the resistance Rl and measure the voltage in its place, V oc , using the multimeter
in TinkerCAD. Your circuit should like this

- Take a snap shot of the circuit and insert it below

- In the same setup, set the multimeter to measure current, I sc. Take a snap shot of the
circuit and insert it below

- To find the Thevenin resistance compute

V oc
RTH = =?
I sc

Rth=20/36.1*10^-3 + 554 ohms

Method (2):
- Set both voltage supply to zero.
- Set the multimeter to measure the resistance. Take a snap shot of the circuit and insert it
below
- Write down your answer
RTH =?
Maximum Power Transfer
To verify the maximum power transfer theorem proceed with the following procedure:

- Replace Rl with a potentiometer, R x.

- Add multimeter to measure voltage across the potentiometer.
- Add multimeter to measure current through the potentiometer.
- Your circuit should like this:

- Show your TinkerCAD circuit below:

- Vary the values of the potentiometer according to the table below and record your
measurements.

Rx 200 Ω 400 Ω 600 Ω 8 00 Ω 1000 Ω 120 0 Ω

Vx 10.4V 11.8 10.4 8.48 5.15 13.7
Ix 12.8 14.8 17.3 20.8 26.8 11.4
mA
P x =V x I x 133.1 175 180 176 138 156
(mW ) 2
Table 4
- Plot the P x vs R x and insert you figure below.
-

What do you conclude from the graph and the results from the Thevenin theorem part?

Peak is at a resistance of 600 and a maximum power of

180mW
