Activity 1
Activity 1
1. Compare the evidence gathered with the predictions you made; and
2. Describe the properties of solution based on observation
Materials Needed:
6 cups water
6 pieces, spoon
Either of the following cheeseclothe (kalsa), old white t-shirt or filter paper
2 table spoon each of the following: sugar, salt, mongo seeds, powdered juice,
cooking oil, vinegar
12 clear bottle or cups
2 pieces each, measuring spoon (1/2 tsp and tsp)
2 pieces each, measuring cups (1/2 cup and 1 cup)
3 funnels or improvised funnel made from 500 mL plastic bottle
1 funnel rock
Procedure:
1. Predict which among the given samples will dissolve in water. Write your
prediction in column 2 of the table.
2. Put one cup of water in each of the cups.
3. Add ½ teaspoon of each of the six samples. Use the teaspoon to dissolve as
much of each sample as possible. Use a different teaspoon for each of the cups.
Question:
1. Describe the mixture that resulted after mixing. Write your answer in column 3.
2. How many phases do you observe? Write your observation in column 4.
3. Identify the solute in each of the mixture. Write your answer in the blank.
Sugar, salt and powdered juice are solute since they are dissolved in water.
4. What is the solvent in each mixture?
Water since it is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid
5. Which of the following are solutions? Write your answer in column 5
Conclusion:
The solute cannot be separated from the solvent through filtration because
these are so small that they pass through the filter paper or cheesecloth. And
also a solution is often clear and transparent.
