● Title: Using brain breaks to help boost discipline during Covid for 5th and 6th grade
through Zoom.
● Statement of Purpose:
○ What is ONE real life problem that you identify and would like to solve?
■ Students are struggling with discipline and focusing while in class
virtually.
○ Why do you think it’s important to solve this problem?
■ It is important to solve this problem because the lack of focus interferes
with their ability to learn virtually.
○ What are some possible solutions to your problem?
■ Clearing space for students to learn without distractions near.
■ Setting personal goals.
■ Having brain breaks.
■ Creating a preparation chart.
○ What is the ultimate impact you would like to see or determine to achieve?
● Literature Review: Find 3-5 research resources (or more) related to the problem.
For each resource, please report:
❏ There are three resources we are using for our project which have similarities and
differences. All are discussing different tools students can use while learning and
trying to stay focused. Each has a different way of presenting the tools. In “Using
Brain Breaks to Restore Students’ Focus” it discusses the importance of brain
breaks which is the tool. In “Distance Learning FAQ: Solving Teachers and
Students Common Problems” it discusses how teachers need to have one on one
time with the learner to be able to provide them with strategies on how to stay
structured and away from distractions. In “COVID-19 and At-Home Learning”
mentions how students need to take “digital recess” which leads to taking plenty
of breaks in order to get physical activity and away from screens. Also goes over
“plan your work and work your plan” which mentions good planning can relieve
stress from children and also parents. Helping students prioritize to create goals,
tasks and deadlines.
❏ Article 1: One resource we found was explaining how brain breaks help students
stay focused which can be part of a tool we can use to solve the issue of having a
hard time concentrating while learning from home. It discusses how students who
stress and have high intensity work loads need time for the brain to breath. It is
supposed to restore optimal mood, attention, and memory. It also gives you
examples of different types of brain breaks to use. They are saying to solve the
issue of students not being able to focus on work they should use brain breaks.
❏ Article 2&3: We found two resources that have a connection with each other. One
of the resources informs us on different ways distance learning makes it hard for
learners to focus while learning at home. The other resource explains different
methods on how we can help learners focus during distance learning. It is crucial
to provide learners with the support they need to give them the opportunity to
succeed from home during these difficult times.
❏ Article 4: Another resource we found briefly goes over a few tips that can help
navigate students become more successful/disciplined during these times. It goes
over some of our main solutions for example making space for learning, digital
recess, digital quarintes, and etc. All of these topics go into depth and are very
helpful on where to get started in our current situations. Although it says it's for
parents it is definitely information us as tutors and teachers can take into
consideration.
