APT300S Tutorial - Refrigeration

The document provides information and questions regarding two refrigeration cycle problems using different refrigerants. For the first problem using R717 as the refrigerant: the refrigerant enters the compressor at 152 kPa and leaves at 1180°C; the refrigerant enters the evaporator as a dry saturated vapor with 18.3% dryness fraction; the COP is calculated to be 3.77; and the required refrigerant mass flow is 16 kg/min to freeze 25 tonnes of fish from 23°C to -15°C over 8 hours. For the second problem using Refrigerant ISCEON 69S: the relevant pressure-enthalpy diagram data is provided; the COP is calculated to

Refrigeration

Question 1

A vapour compression refrigeration plant uses R717 (Ammonia) as the refrigerant and operates
between pressure limits of 152 kPa and 1100 kPa. At the beginning of the compression the
refrigerant is dry saturated and at the end of isentropic (adiabatic) compression it has a
temperature of 1180C. In the condenser the refrigerant is condensed, but not cooled.

a) Sketch the P-h diagram for the refrigerant showing all relevant values
b) Calculate the dryness fraction of the refrigerant at the entrance to the evaporator
c) Calculate the COP (Cp for superheated vapour = 2.6 kJ/kg.K)
d) Calculate the mass flow of the refrigerant in kg/min required to freeze 25 tonnes of fish
at -150C from a temperature of 230C in 8 hours
T sat P Enthalpy (kJ/kg) Entropy

C kPa hf hg Sf Sg

28 1100 1132.05 2286.1 10.4563 14.2904

Fish data:

Freezing point = -2.250C

Specific heat capacity before freezing = 3.18 kJ/kg.K

Latent heat of fusion = 235 kJ/kg

Specific heat capacity after freezing = 1.72 kJ/kg.K

Ans: b) x = 0.183; c) COP = 3.77; d) Refrigerant mass flow = 16 kg/min

Question 2

A vapour compression refrigerator uses Refrigerant ISCEON 69S and operates between the
pressure limits of 462.47 kPa and 1785.9 kPa. At the beginning of the compression the
refrigerant is dry saturated, and at the end of isentropic compression it has a temperature of
590C. The compressor has a bore and stroke of 75mm and runs at 8 rev/s with a volumetric
efficiency of 80%. The temperature of the liquid refrigerant as it leaves the condenser is 32 0C
and its specific heat capacity is 1.32 kJ/kg.K. The specific heat capacity of the superheated
vapour may be assumed constant at 0.898 kJ/kg.K. Cp for water = 4.187 kJ/kg.K.

a) Draw the P-h diagram describing the system and insert all relevant data
b) Determine the COP
c) Determine the mass flow of the refrigerant in kg/h
d) Determine the cooling water required by the condenser, in kg/h, if cooling water
temperature rise is limited to 120C.
P ts Specific enthalpy (KJ/kg) Specific entropy Specific volume (m3/kg)

b) COP = 4.451; c) mass flow = 166.89 kg/h; d) cooling water mass flow = 580.45 kg/h
