Tut 8 - Multi Stage Compressors

This document contains two questions from a tutorial on multi-stage compressors for a chemical engineering thermodynamics class. Question 1 involves calculating the intermediate pressure, motor power, and intercooler heat transfer for a two-stage air compressor. Question 2 involves determining the polytropic power, cylinder swept volumes, and motor power output for a two-stage air compressor operating at 7MPa and delivering 2.4 m3/min of air. The tutorial is due on October 9th, 2019.

Tutorial 8
Muli-Stage Compressors
Due Date: 9th October 2019 @ 13h00

Question 1

A two-stage piston air compressor deals with 14m3 of free air per minute; free air conditions
being 98kPa and 180C. The delivery pressure is 3.1MPa, the law of compression being PV1.25
= constant throughout. Conditiond in the compression cylinder during the suction stroke are
90kPa and 270C. Intercooling is complete and the mechanical efficiency is 75%. Calculate:

a The intermediate pressure for minimum work

b The corresponding power of the driving motor

c The heat transfer per second in the intercooler

For air take R = 287 J/kg.K and Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg.K

Question 2

A two-stage single-acting compressor is required to deliver air at 7MPa from an induction

pressure of 100kPa, at a rate of 2.4m3/min measured at free air conditions of 101.3kPa and
150C. The temperature and the index of compression for both stages is 1.25. The speed of
the compressor is 750rpm.

a Determine the polytropic power

b Determine the swept volumes of the cylinders

c If the mechanical efficiency of the compressor is 85%, determine the power

output of the motor.
