MEC411 2014 - 09 Test 2

This document contains instructions and questions for a test on mechanics of materials. Question 1 asks students to (a) describe three common types of beam supports and (b) determine the equation of elastic curve and deflection for a beam with a constant flexural rigidity subjected to a distributed load. Question 2 asks students to (a) suggest two ways to increase the critical load of a column and (b) compute the length and critical load of a built-up beam with a specified modulus of rigidity and maximum deflection. Question 3 asks students to (a) sketch Mohr's circles for five stress states and (b) determine the principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and associated normal stresses

QUESTION 1

a) Beams are often classified as to how they are supported. Describe three types of
supports commonly found in beam.

QUESTION 2

a) Critical load is the maximum load a column can support before it begins to buckle.
Suggest two design improvements that can be made on a column with length L so that
the critical loading, Pcr can be increased.

b) A built up beam with cross section as shown in Figure
re Q2(b) is simply supported

modulus of rigidity, E = 210 GPa.

 i) Compute its length, L given that when it is subjected to a load of 40 kN per meter
