Introduction
Animal husbandry contributes significantly in supplementing the income of small, marginal farmers and
landless labourers and in generating gainful employment opportunities especially self-employment to a
substantial number of the rural and urban population many of whom are women who play a significant
role in the care and management of livestock. Moreover, they are also intricately associated with the
social, cultural and traditional values of the region.
It plays a significant role in providing veterinary health care and improving the genetic production
potentialities of livestock and poultry reared in the State. Apart from this, various beneficiary oriented
schemes are also being implemented for the economic upliftment and welfare of the poor, downtrodden
and weaker sections of the society. Various veterinary institutions spread throughout the State provide
the above services. With the dedicated and sustained efforts of the department in the implementation of
various beneficiary oriented programmes and judicious utilisation of animals and the natural resources
in an eco-balanced way, the livestock sector of the State has been elevated to a prominent position.
Project Justification
10
● To strengthen the Animal Husbandry Sector, an allied sector of agriculture to provide additional
income to the farmers.
● To conserve and raise awareness about indigenous cattle breeds, desi dogs, etc.
● “An in-depth study of infection in animals will help curtail the majority of zoonotic viruses. It is
an area which hasn’t had enough focus in the past. The need is to synergise both veterinary and
medical science. The one world one health concept is picking up, and this helps tame 90 per cent
of viral and bacterial infections.” - Dr S. Prathapan, Director of Clinics at Madras Veterinary
College (Retired).
● Chief Secretary Shanmugam hopes that at least 500 new job opportunities will be created once
the livestock park is set up (TOI Article).
● Persons and farmers interested in starting businesses related to meat processing can undergo
training at the incubation centre, and they would be offered necessary assistance in setting up a
business.
● The plan to set up a new veterinary college in Salem comes after the TANUVAS Registrar stated
that the establishment of new veterinary colleges in the northern part of the central region will
help to extend quality services and capacity building of farmers and entrepreneurs involved in
livestock and poultry development.
● Currently TANUVAS 360 students in Madras Veterinary College, VCRI Namakkal, Tirunelveli
and Thanjavur. The government has proposed to increase the seats to 440 from 2022-23 academic
year, due to the growing demand of veterinary education programmes, evident from the number
of applications received over the years.
Aim

facilities and faculty housing.
Objectives
● To study and understand the design of campuses through case studies and how a veterinary
college is different from others.
● To study and understand the site conditions, analyse them and make inferences.
● Design the zoning and master plan.
● To design a campus and business incubation centre adhering to the standards, with adequate
lighting.
● To design comfortable living arrangements for the faculties, students and trainees.
● To design recreational and landscaped spaces.

enclosing an area of 50 acres(approx) will be designed with the master plan of the above mentioned and
detailed building plans, landscape and open space design.

effectively and would have to rely on secondary sources such as contact persons, net studies, literature
studies, etc.
