Saudi Aramco Inspection Checklist

This document is a Saudi Aramco inspection checklist for reviewing a procedure for weld deposit chemical composition analysis of final weld overlays. It contains acceptance criteria regarding general requirements such as ensuring the procedure is project specific. It also lists specific requirements such as analyzing elements like carbon, nickel, chromium, and more for stainless steel and nickel alloy weld overlays. The checklist requires that the frequency of chemical composition analyses be conducted according to standards based on whether the welding is automatic or manual.

A General Requirements (Use this checklist in conjunction with SAIC-W-2017)

Procedure or Method Statement is project specific and identifiable by

indicating the following, (as per ISO 9001:2000, Para. 4.2.3 e): Sch Q,
A1
a. B.I. or Job Number/Contract Number Para . 3.1
b. Title

SAES-W-014,
A2 All chemical analysis methods shall conform to ASME/ASTM A751.
Para. 4.11

Weld deposit chemistry shall be specified in engineering design. Where a

nominal alloy designation for overlay or cladding is listed (e.g., 316L), then SAES-W-014,
A3
overlay deposit shall meet equivalent filler metal composition reqmts Para. 4.4
unless otherwise specified or exempted in this standard.

SAES-W-014,
A4 The procedure listed the accuracy limits for each element to be analyzed.
Para. 6.4

B Specific Requirements

Final weld overlay surface shall have the chemical composition checked
prior to final PWHT or hydrotest, All elements specified for deposit
chemistry shall be analyzed and reported (except for carbon when using
the X-ray fluorescence method).Overlay Chemistry is tested by:

A) Physical sample (drillings) removed for quantitative analysis

B) Portable spectrograph. With the specific approval of SA Insp, a SAES-W-014,

B1
portable X-ray fluorescence machine may be used instead of a Para. 6.4
spectrograph.
Note:
1) Analysis method & accuracy limits for each element shall be submitted
to Inspection for review & approval.
2) Repair method for
areas where samples have been removed shall be submitted to
Inspection for review and approval.

Following elements to be analyzed for all stainless steel and nickel-based

alloy weld metal overlays : SAES-W-014,
B2
C, Ni, Cr, Cu, Mo, Mn, Fe, Nb, Ti and other alloying elements as Para. 5.6
applicable.

For overlay materials other than those listed in Item B2 (above), the
SAES-W-014,
B3 elements to be analyzed were specified by CSD and are listed in the
Para. 5.9
procedure.

For welding procedure qualification, the chemistry of the overlay shall be

measured at 1.5 mm below the minimum specified overlay thickness. This
is regardless of the thickness of the as-welded deposited thickness in the SAES-W-014,
B4
procedure qualification. Inconel Alloy N06625 overlays shall have a Para. 5.7
maximum iron content of 10%. Monel overlays shall have a maximum iron
content of 4.5%.

The frequency of chemical composition analyses shall be as follows:

a) Automatic welding - One analysis for each overlay area or
clad joint. Separate analyses shall be made for each
SAES-W-014,
B5 heat/batch of filler metal or electrode.
Para. 6.5
b) Manual welding - One analysis for each 1 m sq. of area or
one analysis at intervals of 2 m or less for overlay
restoration of clad joints.
