To install the demo version, there is a special parameter that must be passed to the installer when it is
launched, as follows (Below are quick steps but you should follow a step-by-step on the next page):
• Follow the GUI prompts for a standard NSM installation. (Do not install Network Security
Central Manager (NSCM)).
Note: The exact syntax and case above (–D$DEMO$=YES) are required to install the demo version.
1 1 Make sure you are logged in to the NSPMGR virtual machine as user jsmith with
password mcafee123! and close all open programs.
1 2 To install the McAfee Network Security Manager (NSM) Software first open a command
prompt.
1 3 Click Start > Windows System > Command Prompt. The command prompt window
opens.
1 4 To switch to the F: Drive, type F: at the command prompt and press Enter.
1 5 At the F:\ drive command prompt, type DIR and press Enter. Make sure the setup.exe
is present.
To install the demo version, there is a special parameter that must be passed to the
installer when it is launched and that is (-D$DEMO$=YES). The exact syntax and case
sensitivity must be applied for the demo to install correctly. At the end of the install
lab, we have included Troubleshooting the Demo Installation tips.
For simplistic, the original downloaded NSM_10.1XXX_Setup.exe installer file was
copied into the F: Drive and renamed as “setup.exe”.
1 6 At the F:\ drive command prompt, type setup.exe –D$DEMO$=YES and press ENTER.
Note: It may take up to a minute or more to display install pop-up. If you get a UAG
prompt, click Yes.

would you like to create product icons. Click Next.
1 16 For the both Database Root Password and Retype Password fields, enter

1 17 For the Solr Installation Directory verify the drive letter is F, if not change it to
F. Click Next.
1 18 At the Optionally Specify Maximum RAM Usage, leave the default Actual
Maximum RAM Usage 4095 MB. Click Next
1 20 On the Pre-Installation Summary dialog box review and verify your settings.

End of Task
Files None
Scenario You followed the installation from Lab 2-1 and you are not seeing the Demo
folder present in F:\Program Files\McAfee\Network Security
Manager\App\diag folder.
The only reason for this is due to an unknown/wrong value passed to the
installer.
Refer to the task and step table for detailed instructions to complete the lab
7 1 If you pass the installer an invalid parameter, e.g., “-d” instead of “-D”, the installer will
come into memory for a moment while preparing, but then drop out.
If you instead pass the installer the correct parameter, but an unknown/wrong value,
e.g., “-D$demo$=yes” (incorrect casing of “DEMO” and “YES”), the production NSM
will be installed.
So, if the installer does not launch and complete as expected, you likely passed it an
invalid parameter. If it does indeed complete successfully, there are two ways to
confirm that you passed it the correct value:
• You can view the parameter value passed to the installer in the following file:
<INSTALL_DIR>/App/UninstallerData/Logs/installer_debug.txt
• Log in to the GUI. If the demo was installed, you should see devices already
managed, including an IPS sensor called “NS9200” and an NTBA appliance
called “NTBA-GARUDA”. If the production version was installed, there will
be no devices managed.
Solution: Un-install the Manager and re-install using the correct case-sensitive
parameter.
7 3 Uninstall the 10.1 Manager software that you installed earlier. Use Control
Panel>Parameters and Features>.
7 5 Once complete, reboot the Windows Server, and log back in and delete the Network
Security Platform install directory (including the MariaDB install directory). In our class,
go to the F: Drive and delete Program Files folder.
7 6 Now, re-install and refer to the original Lab 2-1 installation instructions.
End of Task
End of Lab
