(CLO - 4) : (Cognitive Level C3, I.e., Applying) (PLO - 2, I.e., Problem Analysis)

The document contains a midterm exam for an Electric Drives course. The exam consists of 5 multi-part questions related to electric motors and drives. Question 2 asks the student to solve 5 sub-problems: 1) calculate the regenerative braking speed of a dc shunt motor; 2) calculate the current and firing angle for a 2 quadrant converter supplying an inductive load; 3) determine the equilibrium points and stability of a system with given transfer functions; 4) calculate the rotor starter circuit resistance for maximum torque on an induction motor; 5) calculate the speed and firing angle for a separately excited dc motor controlled by a single phase rectifier.

Course Title: Electric Drives Semester: Fall-2020

Exam: Mid Term Date: 08/01/2021
Maximum Marks: 15 Time: 48 hours
Course Instructor: Engr. Muhammad Kamran Khan

(CLO_4): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Applying) (PLO_2, i.e., Problem Analysis)

Question No.2: Solve the following questions (3+4+3+2+3)

1) For a 230V dc shunt motor, Ra=0.04 ohms and Eb= 215V and speed=800 rpm. The motor (3)
is driving a load having TL=60 N-m. Calculate speed during regenerative braking.

2) A 2 quadrant converter is supplying a load having (4)

Ra= 2 ohm in series with large inductance
Eb= 150 V and Vs=400V
i) Calculate the current in the load if firing angle is 400
ii) If load current=80 A, determine firing angle if we want to achieve regenerative braking

3) Given that: (3)

Tm= (wm) 3 + 11wm and TL=6 (wm) 2 +6

Calculate equilibrium points and determine their steady state stability.

4) A 6 pole, 50 Hz induction motor is rotating at 200 rpm. If rotor resistance=0.04 ohms and (2)
standstill rotor reactance=0.15, determine resistance of rotor starter circuit if maximum
torque is to be exerted on the motor at starting.

5) A 230v, 600rpm, 100 A separately excited dc motor has armature circuit resistance of (3)
0.08 ohm and infinite inductance. Motor is controlled by single phase half controlled
rectifier with source voltage of 230V, 50 Hz .

i) Calculate speed when firing angle=60o and torque= 100N-m

ii) Calculate firing angle when speed = 600rpm at rated torque.
