Electric Motor Drives - Bee - Bew 21

1) The document is an exam for an electric motor drives course consisting of 5 questions. Question 1 involves designing an electric drive system for a manufacturing company and calculating the power consumed by an electric bus motor. 2) Question 2 discusses how the characteristics of an electric motor must match the load for an effective drive system and proving relationships involving the starting of a motor with a linearly rising load torque. 3) Questions 3-5 involve deriving equations, explaining regenerative braking, calculating values for a DC shunt motor operation and regenerative braking mode, and discussing the importance of rapid stops for drive systems. The exam requires calculations, diagrams and explanations across various electric motor drive topics

REGIONAL MARITIME UNIVERSITY

MARINE ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
BEE21/BEW21
END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS
BEE 408-ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVES

INSTRUCTIONS: Attempt question (1 & 2) and any other two questions.

TIME ALLOWED: 8 Hours

QUESTION 1
a) You are the design engineer and a product of Regional Maritime University. You have been
given a task by the managing director of your company based on a request made by a
manufacturing company to come out with a specific drive system to help improve their production
due to growth in their customer demands.
In order to achieve this task, explain the basic structures or things you will need to consider during
your preliminary survey. Support your arguments with diagram. [15 MARKS]

b) The mass of the electric bus in Figure below is 5000 kg, including the passengers. A single
motor mounted on the front wheels drives the bus. The wheel diameter is 1 m. The bus is going
uphill at a speed of 50 km/hr. The slope of the hill is 30°. The friction coefficient of the road
surface at a given weather condition is 0.4. Ignore the motor losses, and compute the power
consumed by the motor. [15 MARKS]

Bidirectional load torque

QUESTION 2

a) As a design Engineer, you know that when an electric motor is connected to a mechanical
load, the system operates at a speed-torque status that matches the characteristic of the
motor as well as the mechanical load. Justify this with a diagram and explain why if you

c) For the feed-screw drive system in Fig. 1, obtain

(i) The equivalent load torques.
(ii) The equivalent moment of inertia. Assume the feed-screw is loss free.

QUESTION 4
a) A 37.5 H.P., 220V D.C shunt motor with a full load speed of 535 r.p.m. is to be braked by plugging.
i) Estimate the value of resistance which should be placed in series with it to limit the initial braking current to 200
amps.
ii) What would be the initial value of the electric braking torque and the value when the speed had fallen to half its
full load value?
Armature resistance of the motor is 0.086 ohms and full load armature current is 140 amps.
[15 MARKS]
b) Briefly explain why for a series motor,Regenerative Braking is not suited. [2.5 MARKS]
C) Rapid Stops are very essential when designing a drive system. What is your view on that as a
design Engineer and why is it necessary? [2.5 MARKS]

QUESTION 5
A 440 V, dc shunt motor has a rated armature current of 76 A at a speed of 1000 rev/min. The
armature resistance of the motor is 0.377 Ω, the field resistance is 110 Ω, and the rotational
losses are 1 kW. The load torque of the motor is bidirectional. Calculate the following:
(a) No-load speed of the motor
(b) Motor speed, where the armature current is 60 A during regenerative braking
(c) Motor torque during regenerative braking
(d) Power delivered by the source under the normal motor operation
(e) Generated power during regenerative braking
