Column Reinforcement Design: Uex Uey

The column is 305x305mm with an effective length of 1.85m. 8 numbers of 20mm diameter longitudinal bars are provided. Shear reinforcement of 8mm stirrups at 150mm c/c is designed to satisfy the shear capacity. Confinement reinforcement of 8mm bars at 100mm c/c is provided over a length of 450mm at each end to satisfy ductility requirements. Vertical stirrups of 10mm diameter at 100mm c/c are designed at the ends to resist the maximum shear force of 110kN. 10mm stirrups at 150mm c/c are provided in the middle section.

Lateral Reinforcement Design (IS 456-2000,Cl.26.5.3.2 ( c ) )

The minimum diameter φt and maximum spacing st of the lateral ties,
φt = i) 25/4 = 6.25 mm
ii) 6 mm Provide Provide 8 mm stirrups bars
st =
i) D = 310 mm
ii) 320 mm
iii) 300 mm
According to IS 13920 : 1993, Cl.7.3.3,
Spacing of hoops shall not exceed half of least lateral dimension of column,
i.e. 150 mm
Provide shear rebar of dia 8mm @ 150 c/c spacing
Confining reinforcement,
Special confining reinforcement shall be provided over length l˳ from each joint face ,
where l0 is not less than,
a. Larger lateral dimension = 350 mm IS 13920:1993
b. 1/6 of the clear span = 450 mm Cl 7.4.1
c. 450 mm
Provide confining reinforcement to a length (l0) = 450.000 mm

Spacing of confining reinforcement,

= 1/4 of least lateral dimension = 75.000 mm >100 mm IS 13920:1993
Adopt spacing = 100.000 mm CL.7.4.6
Provide 8 mm dia. of confining reinforcement 100 mm c/c

Spacing of longitudinal bars

In X-direction,
Space between end bars = 185 mm <48*φt(384)
Space between bars = 46.25 mm <75mm

In Y-direction,
Space between end bars = 185 mm <48*φt(384)
Space between bars = 46.25 mm <75mm

Since, longitudinal bar are spaced more than 75mm on either side so transverse
reinforcement should go around corner bars as well as alternate bars with closed type
3. Check for shear and design of vertical stirrups
Width (b) = 457.2 mm
Overall Depth (D) = 406.4 mm
Clear Cover = 40 mm
Effective Cover (d') = 62.5 mm
Effective Depth (d) = 343.9 mm
Grade of Concrete (fck) = 25 N/mm²
Yield Strength of Steel (fy) = 500 N/mm²
Stirrup Diameter (Ø) = 8 mm
Leg= 2
longitudinal rebar Dia. (Øl) = 25 mm
Legth= 3.175 m
40.1, At Ends
40.2.3, Max design shear force at ends (Vu) = 110 KN
τv= 0.700 N/mm²
26.5.1.6,
40.3
and 40.4,Percentage of tensile steel of end(Ast)= 2.650 %
Table-19
and 20,
IS:456- Now,
2000) Design shear strength of M20 concrete (τc)
Interpolating,

%Ast,pro
v τc
(IS 456:2000 page 72) 2.5 0.82
2.650 0.880
2.5 0.88
we get,
τc= 0.880 N/mm²
Max shear stregth of M20 concrete (τc,max)
(IS 456:2000 page 72) = 3.1 N/mm²
Since,
τue > τc
τue < τc,max
Hence,shear reinforcement is to be designed
Required capacity of shear reinforcement(Vus)=Vu-τc*b*d
V'us= -28.36 KN
Take 2-legged 8 mm Ф vertical stirrups
Area of vertical stirrups (Asv)= 157.08 mm²

Spacing of Stirrups (Sv)=

Sv = -828.49 mm
where,
Sv over the distance of 2*d= 688 mm
Sv≤3d/4 86 mm
(Clause Sv≤ 8*φl 200 mm
6.3.5,IS:1
3920- Dia of stirrups 10 mm
1993) Sv≥ 100 mm
Adopt Sv = 100 mm
Minimum area of vertical stirrups(Asv,min)

Asv,min = 42mm² < 101

Hence ok mm²,
At mid span
Dia of stirrups 10 mm
Sv≤d/2 171.95 mm
Adopt Sv = 150 mm

#REF!

Elsewhere,10mm Ф two legged vertical stirrups @150 C/C

is provided .The distance of first hoop should be at a
distance from each end which is less than 50mm.
Which also satisfies the criteria for torsion reinforcement
distribution as per-:IS:456-2000,Clause 26.5.1.7.
