DEFINITIONS OF HEALTH

They thought health was just about the body

The health of your body is affected by environmental factors

(WHO) health also includes your mind and social health as well as
physical health

"A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO)

Health fluctuates and changes and It is impossible to be 100%
healthy (because of the relative and dynamic nature of health

Physical health- the body's capacity to carry out everyday


activities and be free from illness
● fitness level, weight, body shape, ability to recover from
illness
Social health - out ability to form and make relationships with
other people
● Social standards & norms of behaviour
Mental health and wellbeing - psychological and emotional
well-being. It involves thinking processes (cognition) and learning
and making healthy choices.
● Sense of self, good decision making, develop skills and
knowledge
Spiritual health and wellbeing- our ability to establish a purpose
in life
● Hope, purpose and peace

THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE DIMENSIONS OF HEALTH


Health must be viewed holistically
The four dimensions of health are interrelated. Positive or negative
impacts on one dimension also impacts the other dimensions.

A person m Moves up and down the continuum throughout their lives

Dynamic nature of health

Refers to the constant fluctuations that occur


in our level of health.

HOW AN INDIVIDUALS HEALTH CIRCUMSTANCES AFFECT THEIR HEALTH

Individual circumstances that impact health


Where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, our income,
educations levels and our relationships with friends and family all
have considerable impacts on health.
