Laboratory Assignments On Experiment 1: Measurement of Self-Inductance by Maxwell's Bridge

This document provides instructions for a laboratory experiment to measure self-inductance using Maxwell's bridge circuit. Students are asked to download simulation software, attend an introductory lab session, and submit a report within one week. The objective is to determine the self-inductance of a coil. The procedure describes connecting components in the Maxwell's bridge diagram and balancing the bridge by varying resistances and capacitance. Students are asked to simulate the circuit, plot detector current by varying resistances, determine the coil's Q-factor, and simulate replacing the coil to achieve a new balanced condition.

Laboratory Assignments on Experiment 1: Measurement of

Self-Inductance By Maxwell's Bridge

 General Instructions:
1. Download and install LTSpice from the following Link:
https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-calculators/ltspice-simulator.html
2. Plan to attend the laboratory after reading the necessary theory. You will be asked few basic
questions before starting the experiment. After finishing the experiment, get it evaluated by
assigned TA.
3. Submit the soft copy of report in Moodle within one week.

 Objective: To determine the self-inductance of the coil.

 Experimental Procedure (For information and knowing the theory): Connect the components and the air
corded coil as shown in the diagram. Set the product of R 2R4 at a convenient value and obtain the
balance by varying R1 and C1. Decide the ranges for R 1 and C1 through which they can be varied. Repeat
the procedure with different values of the product R 2R4 and decide upon readings that permit maximum
accuracy for the measurement. Compute the error in the measurement and comment on your results.
Study if there is any effect of the impedance of the headphones on the sensitivity of the bridge.
Interchanging of source and detector arms, may as well be studied. If R 2 and R4 are resistance boxes with
a systematic error of ± 0.1 present establish the percentage accuracy in the measurement of the
inductance and resistance of the coil. Now inductance into the coil, an iron core and obtain the balance
for the bridge network. Determine the inductance and resistance of the iron core coil. Explain why and
to what extent the inductance and resistance of the coil have changed. Comment on your experiment
during the experiment.

 Simulation Assignment:
1. Draw neatly the above circuit in LTSpice. All the components should be chosen as ideal. In place of
the detector use a resistance of 50 Ω. Attach the screen-shot of the schematic after entering your
Name and Roll No as a text on it. Please see the reference example below. (10)

2. Use L1=100 mH, R1= 100 kΩ, C1=10 nF and R2=10 kΩ. What is the value of R 4 to achieve balance
condition? Now, plot current through the detector (i.e., the resistor of 50 Ω) by varying the
resistance R2 from 500 Ω to 50 kΩ. Show 10 readings and attach the screen shots of the plot.
Comment on your results. What is the Q factor of the coil? Use a sinusoidal supply voltage (V 1)
having a peak value of 10 V and a frequency of 1 kHz. (10)

3. After achieving the balanced condition in step 2, replace the coil with an inductance of L X=45 mH,
and Q=2. Show the plot of the detector current in this condition? Then, vary the values of the
resistors R1, R2, and R4 (assuming C1 is fixed as before) in order to achieve the new balanced
condition. Show the plot of the detector current under balanced condition. Report the component
values and comment on these result. Use the same sinusoidal supply voltage (V 1) having a peak value
of 10 V and a frequency of 1 kHz. (10)

[Note: In the balanced condition peak current of the detector should be less than 100 nA]
