Internet Publishing Course Syllabus

Overview
Students will:
1. Discuss the history of the Internet and Web page design.
2. Discuss ethical issues concerning the Internet.
3. Become familiar with terminology related to the Internet and Web page design.
4. Discuss multicultural issues concerning the Internet and how they will affect the design
and publishing of a Web page.
5. Learn to use Web page editing software.
6. Learn and develop good Web page design practices.
7. Learn how to publish a Web page to the Internet.
In addition to the mastery of relevant standards, students will...
Prepare for Employment
• Research career opportunities in a technology-based office environment
• Analyze various business careers by looking at salary benefits, job requirements,
educational requirements, employment outlook etc.
• Research a potential employers
• Prepare a work-sample portfolio
Use the Internet as a Business Tool
• Use search engines to find information
• Analyze and summarize information without plagiarism
• Demonstrate appropriate Internet use for business (includes copyright, netiquette,
privacy issues, ethics)
Absences and Tardiness
Absences equate to gaps in one's course work. Since legitimate absences do occur, it is
expected that the student will complete missed and/or make-up work. Any missed work
must be turned in on the next day following any absence. Excessive absences may lead
to academic failure.
How Grades are Computed
Final Letter Grades are based on a percentage of total points at the end of the Semester.
A: 90% and above
B: 80-89.99%
C: 70-79.99%
D: 60-69.99%
F: below 60%
Points for Individual Assignments
Group projects (3 projects – 120 pts. for each project) 360 pts.
Weekly Quizes (10 points each) 80 pts
Weekly Homework (5 points each) 40 pts.
Electronic Portfolio (Due at the end of the Semester) 100 pts.
Homework
Students will find one article per week about technology innovation. The will write and
post a one paragraph summary of the article (along with a link to the full article) on the
HPTEDS “Technology Update” blog.

3. Packet switching
4. Networks that led to the Internet (ARPANET, NPL, Merit Network, CYCLADES,
X.25 and public data networks, UUCP, and Usenet)
5. Merging the networks and creating the Internet (1973–90)
6. TCP/IP goes global (1989–2000)
7. The Future: TCP/IP goes to Outer Space – 2010 to present

Please note: All students work will comply with the LAUSD Acceptable Use Policy for
Internet Access at School.

Projects:
Each project assignment will be centered around a particular genre of internet publishing
and will require that project teams use certain technical elements. All projects will
require that students submit treatments and “pitch” their ideas to the rest of the class.

Rubrics:

Project Rubrics - Assesses the ability to practice and apply the unit objectives to achieve
course expectations. Each rubric will be supplied to the project teams are the beginning
of each project and will contain elements specific to that project.
