History of OF ?
Computer operating systems (OSes) provide a set of functions needed and used by most application
programs on a computer, and the links needed to control and synchronize computer hardware. On the
first computers, with no operating system, every program needed the full hardware specification to run
correctly and perform standard tasks, and its own drivers for peripheral devices like printers and
punched paper card readers. The growing complexity of hardware and application programs eventually
made operating systems a necessity for everyday use.
Internal CommandsThese are for performing basic operations on files and directories and they do not
need any external file support.External Commands These external commands are for performing
advanced tasks and they do need some external file support as they are not stored in COMMANDis the
default command-line interpreter for MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE and Windows
Me. In the case of DOS, it is the default user interface as well. It has an additional role as the usual first
program run after boot (root process), hence being responsible for setting up the system by running the
AUTOEXEC.BAT configuration file, and being the ancestor of all processes.
