JTC SAYS:
We start with two licks for a II-V-I progression in C major. You can use the 'home' scale (the
one based on the I chord) over all of a II-V-I progression. In this case, that would be C
major (C D E F G A B). It then functions as D Dorian over the Dm7 and as G Mixolydian over
the G7... those scales have the same notes, but a different root. Luca plays a chromatic line
over the first G7b9, hinting at the diminished scale (G Ab Bb B C# D E F) and then a series
of triads (C major, A minor, D minor) over the Cmaj7. Note the partial G7b9 arpeggio
(sliding B-D-Ab) in measure 7.
