DMCM 2713 Revision Questions (Chapter 5: Planar Kinematics of A Rigid Body)

The document contains review questions about planar kinematics of rigid bodies from Chapter 5. It asks about the three types of rigid body planar motion, whether points can have angular velocity, conditions for the instantaneous center of rotation, how to form relative velocity and acceleration equations, and what it means if a bar's angular velocity is zero but it has velocities at its ends. It then provides 6 example problems calculating velocities, accelerations, and angular velocities/accelerations of parts in mechanisms under given conditions using instantaneous center of rotation, velocity diagrams, and acceleration diagrams.

DMCM Revision Questions (Chapter 5: Planar Kinematics of a Rigid Body)

2713

Review Questions

1. What are the three types of rigid body planar motion? Give a short description of each.
2. Can a point have an angular velocity?
3. For rigid body in plane motion, is the instantaneous centre of rotation always located either on
the body or at a finite distance from the body?
4. Describe the way on how to form a relative velocity and acceleration equations.
5. What does it mean when the angular velocity of a bar is zero when it has to velocities acting at the
ends of the bar?

1. The hook is attached to a cord which is wound around the drum. If it moves from rest with an
acceleration 6 m/s2, determine the angular acceleration of the drum and its angular velocity after
the drum has completed 10 rev. How many more revolutions will the drum turn after it has first
completed 10 rev and the hook continues to move downward for 4 s? (ans: 10 rad/s2, 35.4 rad/s,
35.3 rev).

2. The vertical-axis windmill consists of two blades that have a parabolic shape. If the blades are
originally at rest and begin to turn with a constant angular acceleration of C 0.5 rad/s2,
determine the magnitude of the velocity and acceleration of points A and B on the blade after the
blade has rotated through two revolutions. (ans: 21.27 m/s, 10.64 m/s, 75.5 m/s2, 37.7 m/s2).

3. For a short time the motor turns gear A with an angular acceleration of A 30t 1 2 rad/s2, where
t is in seconds. Determine the angular velocity of gear D when t = 5 s , starting from rest. Gear A is
initially at rest. The radii of gears A, B, C, and D are rA = 25 mm, rB = 100 mm, rC = 40 mm and
rD = 100 mm, respectively. (ans: 22.4 rad/s)

4. If end A of the hydraulic cylinder is moving with a velocity of v A 3 m/s , determine the angular
velocity of rod BC at the instant shown. (ans: 5.30 rad/s).

5. At the given instant member AB has the angular motions shown. Determine the velocity and
acceleration of the slider block C at this instant. (ans: 0.938 m/s, 5.465 m/s2).

6. Determine the angular velocity and the angular acceleration of the plate CD of the stone-crushing
mechanism at the instant AB is horizontal. Driving link AB is turning with a with a constant angular
velocity of AB 4 rad/s. (ans: 1 rad/s, 10.9 rad/s2).
